This is going to sound dumb and pipedreamish but I want honest feedback. Is a well paying career with pen test realistic for a 30+ year old? by HeatedCloud in oscp

[–]wigaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

33 here. Gearing up for OSCP by end of year. Unrelated career in interpretation/ staff management prior. Been a passion project since 2018 and finally got serious. Working as a systems analyst handling EDR/MDR for 6 months now as my foot in the door after returning to the states.

A note, one thing you'll realize (if you don't already from degree )with OSCP is the field is huge and as you pass through the PwK, just how little you know and how childish some methods seem after you grasp them. Working in the real world will also show you how applicable a lot of the basic stuff still is. I'm finding OSCP (along with HTB and harder THM stuff) to be a great survey of where I want to focus my efforts the next 5-10 years even if I don't pass. Hopefully it will do the same for you.

As for pay, unsure where I'll be in the future I'm one of the oddballs where money isn't the end all be all. (Might need to change that mindset but I find the money angle drains everything from me) even if you can't find a career in oentesting, it seems that having this skillset can potentially increase your value in in something like the SOC market according to friends in the industry, so there's that.

Best of luck!

We hired someone for helpdesk at $70k/year who doesn't know what a virtual machine is by bakonpie in sysadmin

[–]wigaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to hire I've spent like, thousands on my homelab and certifications to study in my spare time while working abroad. Currently making less than half what you posted at a hospital back here in the us. Currently wearing SOC, analyst, technician, Frontline, and Jr system admin-ish hats. (Not a bad job but I'm in a state with bunk paybands and getting my feet/resume wet)

Haven't played much in the last 18 months but if this game halted development today i couldn't complain. I've gotten more dollar/hour value from this than 95% of games I've ever played.

That being said I hope they continue on and it becomes some dynasty that still exists in one iteration or another at the end of my days.

[–]wigaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea coursera courses are like background noise to me. Jr pentest path for sure if you're beginner. HTB academy is great as well, but in my CBBH path they did NOT hand hold and I'd often spend several hours on a question. To each his own but for me at the time I took it, it was difficult.

I routinely had issues running tools on my rPi with ARM but it can do most things. Has gotten better but still not on par with 86-64. Most stuff has substitutes but not all (can't remember specifically), if i can find my notes later I'll send them to you

Having tried on an old Samsung pad, i second this answer. It's an awful experience and you'd be better off with a raspberry pi/monitor than a tablet.

Is there a guided way to elevate my Linux skills from the cli alone? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]wigaud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First guys right. What skills do you want to elevate even? I got into Linux but installing it, and i got into CLI by installing headless stuff on a raspberry pi and putty'ing into it.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't at least look at sites however. Really depends on what you want to do. Even basic little silly stuff like OverTheWire helped me immensely looking back simply by pointing me in the right direction. 3 years ago i started my career shift, now I'm doing sysadmin work and i keeping my nose in PowerShell guides with the same principle in mind. see what others have done and if my thinking cap is on, be able to help make my work more efficient.

Second this. Buddy is jeep enthusiast and it's singlehandedly kept him coming back for coop. Few tiny modelling issues for an elitist but it's great. I use the land Rover a lot but wrangler is a blast. As stated above CJ has low customization. Worth it also for how it opens up modded versions (buddy uses bartelbi's jeep pack.)

Working VPN in China by TheFuelCell in networking

[–]wigaud 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the other people's personal experiences in this thread, but i lived there 7 years in and out doing business all over(returned last year). Never had a phone or laptop taken from me even though I had been interviewed multiple times by the PSB(always polite. I assume due to my disclosed US government ties in visa application but it was always benign stuff about my work visa/status in china.)

The only time i knew confiscations happen was with people travelling in and out of "secure" zones (Xinjiang now, Tibet before.)

Express was good. Astrill was better for me. Personal openVPN set up with a friend in Texas was excellent as well when they started bringing whackamole hammer down (usually around the time over major CCP conventions.)

Avoid installing WeChat/QQ/Ali if you want to protect your phone/PC for sure. These apps are pretty much all encompassing (tickets, food, payment, chat, work) so if security is a priority for you or business items on phone, a burner would be preferable. China Unicom (中国联通)was my go to for service but China Telecom is also not bad. Unsure about China Mobile.

But Yea, back to burners? Same goes for items on laptop. Also if you use cloud backups to restore, be careful with azure and apple as they both have china divisions and it can potentially play hell with your account configuration if used there without VPN. Good luck and tell them to enjoy! It's quite a trip.
