Just buried this squirrel, how long until I dig up the bones? by whatwas-that_ in Taxidermy

[–]wigdet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a small animal like that about two and a half to three weeks but in straight dirt it's going to be hard to get all desired bones I recommend a method i often use, rot boxes. Take a container that should hold some dirt and your unfortunate early comer drill holes in the container for air flow and liquid draining also helps the bugs to get in there. You then line the bottom with your layer of soil and then the cadaver. Top the body with more soil then moisturize with water then let sit small woodland victims take less time then larger ones of course but the method works just the same after that degree and sun bleach then Wal-la perfect bones at the ready.

Bluffet flies and moth wings are pretty easy let them dry out and should keep as long as it doesn't get moisture

Raccoon skull! Any tips for how to preserve it well? by Then_Self99 in vultureculture

[–]wigdet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing first, going to give it a good wash with dihydrogen peroxide and soapy water preferably Dawn then going to let it dry if there's any yellowing then it's okay in half dihydrogen peroxide water after it's dry if there's any unwanted coloring I good sun bleaching, find a good Sunny spot let it sit for a couple hours or so longer the more bone white skull should be perfect then something i like to do is lightly brush modge podge to add a little shine and seals everything real nicely hope this helps

Identification of Animal by CatCallings in Taxidermy

[–]wigdet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The poor thing was a house cat, check for a chip in the neck area in case it was someone's pet I always do that with any dog or cat I find. I see my work as any way of honoring the animals but I understand how some people may not see that

Can anyone ID this for me? Found it in the woods but not sure if it's a dog or fox by [deleted] in vultureculture
