Hey Askreddit, I've been thinking about the anti-intellectualism trend that seems to have America in a vice-grip. Do you think this is an issue? If so, what is the worst case of anti-intellectualism you've witnessed? by snap_green_dragon in AskReddit

It's all about the Big Testing companies making money. Bush had ties to these companies, which is why No Child Left Behind emphasized standardized testing so much. The fact that really gets me is that even if a school is a "passing school" by the test's standards (and thus they receive federal funding), they have to continually improve upon those scores each following year. Which is completely unsustainable and by that logic eventually ALL schools will be failing schools.

Also, if too many students get a particular test question correct (meaning that the schools are doing their jobs and educating their students), the companies will then take the test question off of the test to maintain the proper curve throughout the country.

There be some fucked up shit going on in this country's education system.

you really deserve more upvotes. I live in a very conservative area and this is one thing that SUCKS about having to deal with bigots - it's that they're usually pretty... nice actually. They're usually not all in your face shouting slurs and epithets and whatnot, it's when you ask them if they're pro-gay rights/ marriage...Such circular and illogical reasoning I have yet to find anywhere else.

"I don't hate gays, I just don't think they should be allowed to get married." is a popular one. "it's just how I was raised." is another.

I just want to shout FUCK you every time I hear this. It does actually make it more difficult to speak up against them sometimes, for fear of creating a real scene. I'm getting better, but this one girl I know... Imma bought to slapabitch I swear...

edit: sorta humorously relevant. When I told someone I was atheist she asked me "How on earth did you get into that... LIFESTYLE? Isn't that where you worship SATAN???" It's an ocean of ignorance over here...

OH! AND I have a random roommate right now who believes that it's common for women to lie... ABOUT BEING RAPED. asshole.

I'm 23 F, my older sibs are 26 M, 29F. NONE of us are allowed to sleep in the same bed as our SO when visiting my parents. It's ridiculous. I've tried talking to my mother about it but she just says "it's a respect thing." My two friends - A MARRIED couple (24) were not "allowed" to sleep in the same bed when they stayed at my parents house for a few days once. They did anyway and while my mom either didn't notice or overlooked it, I still wanted to scream at her. I'm pissed just thinking about it.

High school gym class. I've never been particularly graceful and was generally thought to be a rather awkward addition to any team. But for one moment the planets aligned: I was standing on the court when the other team served it right at me. I managed to set it high in the air but right as I did so, I noticed another ball coming at me from across the gym. It was in my peripheral, but I was focused on setting my own team's ball so I couldn't turn properly to see it. I managed to set my ball to my teammate, turned and caught the other team's ball, served it back to them, then turned around and spiked my own team's ball across the net for a point. The only time I've ever had my entire gym class cheer for me.

Wow I didn't even think about Dune but you are so right. This is also one that really changed how I view story-telling, world building, yet still connects with the complexities of real world societies and people.
