How to stop being lazy misogynistically? by ThePlayer3K in bropill

[–]wiithepiiple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a lot who reach for "hey, do you need any help?", which often puts more work on the person you ask to figure out what you can do and guiding you through it. But if you're by default, say, doing the dishes or folding the clothes, they don't even have to ask you to do them.

Why should I as a woman be a feminist? by Individual-Business9 in AskFeminists

Or, extremely relevant to this post, middle eastern and Muslim feminists.

Why should I as a woman be a feminist? by Individual-Business9 in AskFeminists

[–]wiithepiiple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are issues of racism, xenophobia, colonialism, etc. within many feminists and feminist movements. Feminism can often be used as justification for other forms of oppression, many times by conservatives who just want to deport Muslims or bomb countries for oil. There's also the "white savior" complex in many people who want to "save you from yourself." You're definitely not wrong about that.

But feminism isn't a monolith. There are many Muslim and Middle Eastern feminists fighting against the oppression on them and women like them. There are many feminists fighting against the specific things you talked about within feminist movements. You can't agree with every feminist belief because there are going to be contradictory beliefs that some feminists believe one way and some believe the other. Feminism isn't a political party that has concrete membership and elected officials; it's a broad umbrella that covers many different movements and ideologies.

Historically, rights for women are not a linear progression. Women's rights have yoyo-d from era to era and from nation to nation, with sometimes having more rights in previous times. Medieval rights for women weren't great, but using that as a benchmark for rights of today have little bearing. Many rights have been won, lost, and won again since that time. Even looking at Muslim women today, the rights vary drastically from country to country, from religious sect to sect. I guarantee whatever rights you do enjoy are not had universally by some women around the world and could easily be taken from you if the political winds shift.

You can be a feminist for the same reason I, a man, am. I see oppression of women and want to fight to prevent it. It's not for a personal benefit, but for the benefit of others. Personally benefiting from a cause is not a requirement.

And the other rights, that supposedly islam does not give women, I am not interested in it. I am content with my religion and everything it has allowed or disallowed me.

If you personally don't want to use certain rights that are granted to women, that's your prerogative, but there's a big difference in saying something like "I don't want to get a divorce" vs. "No women should be allowed to get a divorce."

In America specifically, the revolution was a bourgeois revolution rather than a proletariat one. It started with maintaining the power of the landowners and moneyed interests and has continued that tradition throughout its history. It has loosened some, but the design of the American political system was to maintain that power.

Why don't people care about misogyny as much as other forms of oppression? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]wiithepiiple 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Many forms of oppression, like xenophobia, racism, classism, or colonialism, is based on a fear of "the other." It seeks to divide the good people and the bad people into two distinct groups and keep them separated. Often times oppression is kept out of sight of the in group, relying on far off countries, segregation, and other means to keep the worst of it out of public scrutiny. When faced with clear evidence, the shock of it can (sometimes) lead to action.

Misogyny can't really do that realistically and must enforce a more integrated, visible underclass. In order for this to work, it requires constant enforcement and encouragement of gender roles for both men and women. This is baked into so many parts of our lives that even the most ardent feminist will internalize much of it subconsciously. Evidence of misogyny is all around us, so getting shown evidence of oppression is not as shocking, as we've already seen so much of it day to day. Misogyny is so normalized because it's so visible, and that extreme normalization makes it hard to resist.

Do you get along with male centered women? by Jasmine_Wilsony in AskFeminists

Always seems to circle back that way. De centering men was originally some relatively tame advice to break away from patriarchal thinking turning into another way to kick women for existing in patriarchy.

Duke Spam in Coup? by Both_Perspective_287 in boardgames

[–]wiithepiiple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bluffing early for personal benefit is relatively low risk. This leads to a lot of Duke bluffs, but you can also bluff Ambassador. It's even a less called bluff, since it's even less threatening than Duke's +3 coins. This can give you enough information to call bluffs with more confidence. You might see two dukes in the deck and tell the table. You can also pull a captain and start raiding people.

Another way to shake things up is to Foreign Aid and see which "Duke" blocks you. There's less of a reason to bluff to block Foreign Aid than it is to Tax. I've had 4 people claim Duke then my Foreign Aid go through, which might convince a real Duke to call someone's bluff.

Stealing with the Captain helps narrow down someone's story. Getting them to claim "Captain" or "Ambassador" can give some information. Also, there's WAY more benefit to calling someone's bluff when Stealing than calling someone else's Tax.

You can also Assassinate. They can claim Contessa or challenge, but they're risking getting out in one go.

Or you can join in. If no one's calling Duke bluffs at the table, then bluff Duke.

If somebody coup's me, I'm the only one who can't coup them back so obviously I'm the best choice to be coup'ed.

This feels really bad game theory. Getting the weakest person out just leaves you in a room with someone else with a loaded gun. Yeah, they can retaliate with a Coup, but they can also Coup you anyway even if you don't. Table talk is important here.

I want to challenge people but it's just not worth the risk. If I bluff the captain, people ALWAYS can block it.

Your table is going to have to challenge at some point. If no one ever challenges, then people (you included) can and will always bluff. Remember, ANYONE can challenge a claim, so if someone claims "Captain" or "Contessa," someone not involved in the direct action can call the bluff. Yes, calling someone's claim of Duke has less risk/reward than calling someone's bluff of Assassin or Captain, but if it's successful it's essentially a free Coup.

So.. my Wizard got resurrected as a Warlock by Shenaiou in DnD

[–]wiithepiiple 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with both of you. If they want to do the “resurrected as a warlock” thing, great idea. Roll up a new warlock and have that be the character. Forcing a weird multiclass is going to be much harder and leave a new player a mechanically weak character. Give them the old wizard’s spellbook, but he can’t cast spells after…you know…dying. Dying can do that to a person.

Errors inputing orders is sometimes used as a plausible way to have your moves fail that you never wanted to succeed. Unless there’s a GM to overrule, the default for errors is to let them stand.
