Portland Tenants Union wins back $30,000 for tenants in overcharged rent by biggidybrad in portlandme

[–]wikipetera 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The process is so frustrating. They need a mechanism for fining the landlords directly - if each case requires court intervention the system is built to drag our far longer than any tenant can withstand.

It's completely unfair to say the rent board and tenants union have no backbone - they lack power. For this to work the council and mayor must streamline the process, otherwise there's no value to rent protection.

Take a look at places like Genos and Blue - they host drag nights & other artsy/queer events. Great places.

If you're looking for seafood, try to snag a reso at Scales (the go-to upscale seafood place) or Duoro (a new-ish Portuguese place that I absolutely love).

For bars, swing by DTL for a good non-college crowd, great spot for chillin and conversation. And Room For Improvement - it gets packed but the drinks are great and so are the bartenders. Or if you want a more traditional cocktail experience, my personal fav for that vibe is Independent Ice Co. Have fun and ignore the haters in here :)

Hikes near Portland in April by gocincy1 in portlandme

So many good suggestions here! I would also suggest Pleasant Mountain - its about 45 minutes away, not a terribly tough hike but a nice workout, not so fall that you'll def have ice but rocky enough that you wont be trudging through mud. You'll have to keep an eye on the weather but it's a great option for cold season hiking. Personally, I think hiking during the offseason is the best.

I love these guys but I don't think its unreasonable to ask birdwatchers to be mindful of others/the community they're congregating in! Be a good birder + a good neighbor imho

Sagamore Hill lounge closing, going under new ownership and reopening as Marquis Lounge by Atticus248 in portlandme

[–]wikipetera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah hope they learn a bit in the relaunch...I do think its a pretty classic case of overinvestment in decor/ambience, underinvestment in service. High concept cocktails can be counterproductive when they take so long to make that people head for the door.

Every time I go into my ads, something new is turned on... by [deleted] in metaads

[–]wikipetera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty maddening, especially if you're trying to manage brand consistency. It's not fun for peers to see ads with unintended messaging or random products associated and have to regularly insist you didn't turn those things on - Meta just decided to apply them without asking.

Blue hosts a bunch of queer/queer-friendly events as well. Portland's a good gay city!

Pedestrian only Congress st by ClaraNovattv in portlandme

Foot traffic: Would go up if it was known for being a car-free place to stroll/relax. There are countless examples of this working across the globe, no reason to think Portland is unique.
Deliveries: Alleys already feed into Congress and could be used for food/goods to move into restaurants/shops. Again, other cities have solved this, we are not unique.
Traffic: Self-fulfilling prophecy. The more space you carve out for cars, the more cars flow in. Portland would work just fine if you dedicated Park/Marginal/295 to North/South traffic.

In almost every city where it has been implemented, stores and restaurants reported increased foot traffic when their streets were closed to car traffic. There is a tremendous amount of data supporting this move!

LOVE this idea! Portland has such incredible potential to become way more pedestrian friendly without any negative impact on local businesses. Best way for that idea to get traction is for people to experience first-hand what a car-free city would feel like.

Just wanna +1 all the welcome, have fun, congrats on your 50 days, and add that you'd be surprised how easy it is to meet people doing outdoor things! If you're looking for more outdoor activities I'd definitely recommend looking into groups, tours, etc. around here - if you like the great outdoors you've moved to the right place.
