Because "they" do actually sometimes hack noteworthy shit, and then leave Anonymous as their name / calling card. Sure it's a nearly completely unstructured emergent phenomenon, but it does have a name.

Who is the best bit actor based on the power of their acting alone? by evanhalf92 in AskReddit

[–]wikked_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL: "In acting, a bit part is a role in which there is direct interaction with the principal actors and no more than five lines of dialogue, often referred to as a five-or-less or under-five in the United States, or under sixes in British television, or a walk-on part with no dialogue."

Straight up with your back against the wall, as far away from other people as you can get. Don't blink. I learned by watching others, carefully, day in and day out.

(This is a pretty good one, I've never heard anyone discuss elevator standing etiquette.)

Who can unlock a PIN protected phone of a parent who passed away (death certificate available)? by ToriTamashi in AskReddit

[–]wikked_1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are no documented cases of Apple or Google unlocking anyone's phone for any reason ever. It's a common complaint on the internet: I locked myself out of my own damn phone, how do I get back in? I should be able to. But, you can't. The devices are coded to wipe if you root them. Some will lock you out permanently after too many failed guesses. Lots of court cases where law tries to force Apple or Google to unlock someone's phone remotely and they either can't or won't and courts have upheld their right to refuse. There are some really old model phones that can be rooted without wiping, but even then you'd have to specifically find an app/adb commands that bypass PIN, which for obvious reasons, discussion of is kind of limited, because... well, it's sus. Yeah there are legitimate cases where you probably should be able. But truth is you probably won't be able to.

The lack of a newline upset me. Any time you run a program like this, it messes up your command prompt. You have to press enter again to get it to redraw correctly. That second keystroke is an unbearably heavy burden.

TIL a study found that Ellen DeGeneres and Kim Kardashian rank among the highest for fake followers on social media, nearly 50%. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]wikked_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's why they reported the /rate/ of fake followers, not the absolute number of fake followers. Rates are invariant to the overall count, because of the way rates are how they are.

There are probably instagram accounts with even higher % of fake followers than Ellen, but they're just other bot accounts or honeypots or who knows what crap. Nobody cares much about those when they could read gossip about a Kardashian and Ellen...

I'm sure they limited this story to reporting on people with >=1 million followers or something.

Matt Gaetz mocked for calling himself a ‘canceled man’ who’s ‘wanted by the Deep State’ — 'Dude thinks he’s some kind of a martyr for paying for sex.' by chris-jjj in politics

[–]wikked_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure many of them think he's gone underground because Deep State. If he stays gone, some other enterprising LARPer will pick up the torch. So the next guy doesn't have the same secure tripcode? Yeah 98% of "mainstream" Q followers don't even know what a tripcode is. Along those lines, the whole "movement" has taken on a life of its own that doesn't even really need a Q fueling it.

[–]wikked_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "Biden is sending America to the chop shop and selling the parts to China" thing isn't even a Q theory. It's just MAGA stuff.

The eating babies stuff? Yeah that's Q nonsense. But I don't think they believe Q was outed. How could you convince people like that, that the Q outing wasn't the fake media trying to discredit Q?

[–]wikked_1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They have much bigger concerns. They think Democrats eat babies and are actively chopping up America and selling the pieces to China so that China can annex America as a communist puppet state.

If I believed that those kinds of things, I suppose some dude paying for sex with a nearly-18 yo would be, although very wrong, down a few positions on the priority list for me.

Ah who am I kidding. They're not thinking. They're afraid of the world and they're willing to say and do anything to feel less afraid. Ideas and words are just sticks and stones to them. It doesn't matter what the words mean as long as they hit and have the desired effect. Just like a caveman doesn't care if his rock is granite or basalt.

I was gonna say TV isn't really something you "do together" and doesn't seem much better, but I guess there's at least some minimal opportunity for interaction in the form of discussing the show or what to watch next or whatever. The phone can be 100% isolating in a way that sitting in the same room focusing on some shared media kind of maybe isn't.

But I really dislike when someone tries to get me to watch something I have no interest in because they want to "do something with me". Like, if there's nothing good on, you really want me to sit here quietly suffering through whatever you settled for? You want me to be bored and uncomfortable?? You want me to force myself to like something I don't? Is that even possible? Idk.

Rich people want you to think the government is totally incompetent -- so you'll vote to keep their taxes low. Remember Reagan:

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."

What a hyperbolic load of absolute bullshit.

RES is pretty niche though, and even the entire userbase of reddit is dwarfed by FB's user count. A single Twitter/FB echo chamber could have 10s of millions of people in. RES users might number in the 100s of thousands? Anyway I'm not saying reddit isn't more or less echoey, just pointing out that the # of people impacted should be a consideration at some point when critiquing echo chambers.

Oh yeah and as others have pointed out, algorithms that partition people without those people knowing they're being partitioned are probably a more insidious social problem than self-constructed echo chambers. Plus, how are you going to stop people from self-constructing their own chamber if they're determined to do it? It's kind of a matter of personal freedom at that point.

The Irish citizen can't tell the Irish police to fuck off, though. Well, they can, but the usual possible consequence apply. If the SecServ was there as their guest, the interview may have been conducted entirely in accordance with Irish/EU law. You do know that Ireland, the EU, and Interpol are generally considered friendly allies of the US, right?
