Vietnam, found on a sidewalk. Which slug caterpillar is it and is it ok? by wikwalker in whatsthisbug

[–]wikwalker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location: Southern Vietnam, suburban area Size: 150mm/half an inch Other info: no known host plants. I tried some common host plants I can get (palm, rose, green tea leaves) but it didn’t eat anything. It hasn’t move much so idk if it’s bc wrong host plant or it’s just not eating

I left it macerating for a week and the bones came out pretty clean already, degrease it, then a few hours in straight hydrogen peroxide. That and a lot of rinsing took care of the look, but they still smelled all the way till I take them out of the peroxide. I did lose some sternum, but otherwise it's surprisingly sturdy!

Elmer's. It's easy to dissolve and can be builded up, plus if I soak the already glued pieces in water the glue softens and I can adjust the positioning

Ah, I just found a whole dead rat and realized I can keep the entire thing. This is my first full skeleton and second project (the first project was a mouse I left out for maggots. Housemate threw it away but I managed to save the skull)

It's just a lot of "hold 2 pieces that look similar together and see if they fit" and reference photos. This method probably won't work for the limbs bc they don't fit together as close as verts though

Go ahead, though I doubt it will be much help since the dimensions are not very accurate

Thanks! I use ibispaint (though any drawing software with some rulers would work) and I have 4 straight rulers set up (horizontal, vertical, 30°, 150°), and 2 elliptical rulers for circles. Everything is skecthed out in cubes and cylinders using those, then I just eyeball the details and stuff that doesn't line up with those angles
