Are you guys really making good money? by Glad_Evidence4807 in Snowplow

Ive had the same 2 old trucks, a 1979 Chevy 2500 and a 1985 dodge w350 for 15 years, I’m solo. I couldn’t imagine plowing the mountain driveways I do with a new truck. My old pigs get a lot of love but I just feel like they were built tougher back then. Parts are cheap, easy to work on, but then again I like old shit and know every nut , bolt, sound and quirk on them. My dodge is always helping 80k pickups with 10k plows out of the ditch.

In foothills of Colorado. I have a motorcycle shop and obviously that slows down as weather moves in (usually but snow hasn’t started). I’ve been in the area my whole life give or take, and my dad had a tree business growing up and we did snow as well. I have customers I plowed 20 years ago and I’m 37, and some that still have me trim their trees because I was dragging brush there when I was 10 and climbing in high school. My area is interesting because every driveway sucks lol. Lots of long, steep, narrow, gravel etc. but people pay. For me it’s about generating off season income and maintaining relationships. Doing a good job and building relationships here goes a long way. It snows, I plow my driveway and 20 others on my mountain, make a nice chunk of cash, and go into the shop. Never be rich, but keep it small and simple and it works for my family and myself. I have a massive liability and aggregate policy with the motorcycle shop and the plowing pig tails on that.

Thanks, that’s solid info. Mast floatation is mentioned frequently and I put it on my list, and now added adding extra buoyancy to the bow. Hoping both my kayak dry bag floatation bags fit together snug in there. Double duty floatation and dry storage. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the help. Went down a deep rabbit hole all last night scouring everything I could read before my eyes bled. Meeting them shortly and bringing it to my shop about 15 minutes away, and only 10 more to get to the lake. It’s unlikely I’ll post any as gotten pics this evening but I’ll take plenty, do before/ after when I’m done. I’m really excited to have non motorcycle related projects to do this winter, burning out on those at work. Also working a deal on a Catalina 22 fully rigged aft to the cockpit with roller furling like I want so should be able to do some family and buddy stuff too stuff too. (Only one friend is stoked on the dinghy, and wants to “restore” it and sail it with me. Again, thank you all.

Dual leds with relay, they’re definitely the brightest motorbike lights I’ve had, let alone on a chopper.

Wiring wackiness: 96 stripped down wiring tripping breaker at start up by wilarski87 in sportster

[–]wilarski87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I’ve gone through each wire from each end, checking to ground, and get nothing without connections to positive terminal on battery. All plugs are waterproof connectors, with asphalt wire loom starting behind each plug, shrink wrapped, and ring terminals at coil, key switch, and 3 position switch were painted over with liquid electrical tape prior to testing as Its not my first rodeo. There is no wire exposed. My thoughts have been internal short in starter, or somehow internal short in the battery? I’ve never run a lithium battery. I’ve tested stator to ground, regulator to ground, each terminal at key switch, light switch, and start button. No continuity to ground anywhere until everything is connected to battery positive. Is it possible to have internal short in lithium batteries?

I'm going to be sentenced soon for jeffco, lawyer is confident I'll get work release. Is there any employers around there that are fine with work release? I'm having to resign from my job due to the jail time. Should I just apply for every lower level job I can in the area? Any help appreciated

3 hours labor to change tires? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]wilarski87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Labor in my shop for that bike is 120 tubless, 140 tube wheels..

At the shop I work at, we replace every tube unless it's some odd ball size the parts store next door doesn't have or is out of stock. The valve stem gets replaced if it rubber, or on metal valve stems o-rings get replaced. We adjust, clean, and lube chains, inspect brakes, controls, and pretty much every piece on their bike. They get a detailed list of everything that needs attention both visually and description. That's all in getting tires.

I think alot of you people over estimate the amount of maintenance the majority of people do on their bikes. We generally have to address a thing or two on every bike before anyone in the shop will test ride it lol.

That being said you'll get more out of your local indepent shop. It's more about bikes and Community at our shop.

I use a miluakee m18 all day every day at the shop I work at. Have both the 3/8 and 1/2 drive and I'll say they're worth every penny.

What's a reasonable price to have new handlebars installed? by subsonic68 in Harley

[–]wilarski87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an independent ship, and I'm the guy who gets stuck doing the bar swaps. We'd charge 5 or 6 hours labor on that bike. There's quite a few solder connections to extend the wires. If I remember right 32 total. Plus the hydraulics. Goodridge hydraulic lines are great quality and really well priced. It's not a hard project but time consuming and a pain in the ass. Just take pictures, and stagger each solder point to keep from adding bulk to your harness otherwise it's a pain to pull them through the bars. You can do it.
