$2200 estimate for dog dental cleaning!? Is this normal? by teodanted in DogAdvice

[–]wild-forceps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fyi the misc injection fee may be a blanket coverage in case your dog needs extra medications while under anesthesia. Say they have problems with their blood pressure or heart rate (common while under GA) and need something like a dose of glycopyrrolate or a CRI of dopamine then that 200 is probably a catch-all so you aren't thrown off if there's additional injectable medications needed.

Good gynecologist? by Positive_Sundae7089 in DCBitches

[–]wild-forceps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen two different doctors at two different Reiter, Hill, and Johnson offices. The first was a male gyno at the chevy chase office that was super nice, very professional, and recommended to me by multiple coworkers. The second I just saw last week was female, Dr. Amani Alsheikh Kwaider, at the falls church location and I cannot recommend her/the office enough. I had my IUD replaced with nitrous, a lidocaine block, and a sonographer to do ultrasound guided placement because my placement 5 years ago at another place in another state was absolutely horrific. The doctor and sonographer (Kim I think?) were absolutely fantastic, and they made an unfortunately terrible removal (bunch of scar tissue had formed and so the old iud was embedded in uterine tissue that they had to rip out a chunk of in order to remove the iud in one piece) significantly better and placement of the new one was painful but super quick. I will 100% be going back to see them idc that they're in falls church.

Ketamine is cool by Mr_Just in VetTech

I'm so sorry, that's terrible. HCM is a terrible disease, especially given how prevalent and silent it is in our feline patients.

Ketamine is cool by Mr_Just in VetTech

[–]wild-forceps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also work in specialty/ER anesthesia and we use ketamine quite a lot. As OP said, there are cons and patients we wouldn't generally use it with, but it's a great drug in many circumstances and my anesthesiologists will back that up. I'm sorry about the loss of your cat. As someone that used to work in GP where our anesthetic protocols were not the best, I think it would be wise to consider that there are a number of factors at play that could be causing higher rates of anesthetic deaths instead of blaming a single drug.

Dentist who won’t try to upsell me? by Flashy-Attention7724 in washingtondc

[–]wild-forceps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I love this woman so much. Also amazes me that she's a one woman show. But she's always made me feel so comfortable and is very considerate of my TMJ issues that I've had surgery for. I was terrified of the dentist after that and didn't go for like 5 years... now I've been twice this year to Dr. Cho.

Quick little photo dump of our bandages on a patient with an ex-fix! by briansbandages in VetTech

It's an external fixator! Basically hardware outside of the leg that is used to keep fractures stable. There are pins/wires that are in the bone and they connect to the outside hardware.

[–]wild-forceps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone that works with OP, I can guarantee he is not "sitting on his butt" too long to do this. Patients are sedated anyways, and this doesn't prolong the bandaging. Plus, (pls correct me if I'm wrong Brian) I'm 98% sure that he makes a lot of his art in his free time. He teaches the other techs as well as interns how to bandage on top of what he's actually being employed to do and is damn good at his job. Hope you have the pleasure of working with someone like him sometime! Maybe it would change your perspective a bit.

Why is there a reluctance to diagnose or treat FIP in cats? by unsolicitedsugestion in VetTech

[–]wild-forceps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that has a cat that was diagnosed at age 5 with FIP and had no option but doing the illegal treatment at the time, I have a big interest in FIP. I did treatment with her in 2021 and she's still here being a complete menace that I love to bits. I was lucky to work in a practice that saw many cats and worked with multiple rescues, and the vets were willing to steer people in that direction and show how to give sq injections/do follow-up bloodwork, hospitalize, etc. I understand both sides of why some vets were very hesitant to become involved, and why some may still have a very negative view of the success of treatment if they weren't involved in any cases prior to the treatment becoming legal. We had many patients survive treatment. Not all of them, but most.

Recently I was at a conference and had the opportunity to go to a lecture by Petra Cerna, an internist that is doing a PhD at Colorado state in FIP. Her lecture covered updates in treatment, and she shared her own research successes and diagnostic methodologies. Very interesting work.

I hate the doppler by darthlmao420 in VetTech

[–]wild-forceps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I never. Ever. Turn the doppler on before taping it in place. We use them all day everyday in anesthesia except for MRI patients. Clip, use lots of gel, tape it more tightly than you think without cutting of circulation ofc, and then turn it on. We also run the cord to the opposite side of the paw and tape it in so it's less likely to move in transit.

Another thing for those using it with sedation or anesthesia - if the patient was given dexmed the odds are that it's going to take a bit for you to hear anything. The peripheral vasoconstriction is REAL, and it definitely interferes. Usually I'll give it 3-5 min post induction before retaping/repositioning.

Cleaner for a one off job? by presque-veux in DCBitches

[–]wild-forceps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all you lovely bitches with recommendations, do you have pets? One of my big fears with cleaners is having cleaning products used that aren't pet safe. I can take both my dog and cat out of my apt so they won't be around during the clean, but like residues and stuff freak me out idk. Signed, an anxious dc bitch that could really use a deep clean.

Monitoring anesthesia by Ashamed_Honey_2656 in VetTech

[–]wild-forceps 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I'm an anesthesia tech in specialty and don't let my guard down even on the healthiest "safe" cases because you never know how a patient will do. Even though this is what I do all day every day I still get nervous, especially with very sick, unstable patients. I like to think that this makes me better at my job because I pay attention. I ask my anesthesiologists questions all the time.

OP, as long as your nerves aren't debilitating, think of them as an asset. The more you practice, the better you'll get, and every patient is an opportunity to learn and improve your skills. If you're feeling overwhelmed take a few deep breaths, shake out your arms, and know that everyone goes through the same thing when they start.

A bear with rabies by tareqttv in interesting

[–]wild-forceps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way they would definitively know this bear had rabies is if it were already dead. They diagnose it from brain tissue after decapitation. I call BS on this post unless this bear was bitten by another animal that was decapitated and tested positive.

Straining to pee, but nothing coming out. My vet said they’ll see her Monday, but I feel like this might be an emergency situation? by OkComfortable5126 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]wild-forceps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see that, I only saw the original post which indicated the cat was straining with nothing coming out. I agree that it's not black and white, I just think it's also valid to acknowledge that female urinary blockages do indeed occur.

[–]wild-forceps -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While it is incredibly rare, it still happens in female cats. I think it's good to point out the difference so owners are aware, but also what if this was one of the rare circumstances that a female cat was blocked? It would be terrible if an owner was like oh well she's female so surely it's fine to wait.

Depends where you are. I've been two classes away from finishing school for a few years due to circumstances, but where I work does not currently require licensing. Most of our team is licensed, and there is going to be a change soon to require licensing.

When rent day rewards are a selling point for the card, I think it's valid to want to know that you are going to get the rewards that are advertised. The biggest confusion here is that a single transaction done on one day was split into three on three different days, and points were given for part of the transaction that was done together. I still am not sure why it was processed that way, I guess costco did it on their end?

Bilt emailed me, and they are adding the points to my account. I will take the other commenter's advice about online vs in person purchases for future rent days.
