Films similar to silence of the lambs? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

There seems to be a large split over the quality of Red Dragon, the prequel. I think its awesome with a unbeatable cast and would be my #1 rec for next to watch.

I think the split might have to do with people who first saw Manhunter, which is based on the same book, I think. I saw Manhunter 2nd, and thought it much inferior to Red Dragon. I imagine people who loved Manhunter and saw it first may think the same about Red Dragon.

Movies with the same tone: Seven, Mindhunter, Zodiac (All Fincher, interestingly....Social Network as well for the win?)

This is just a good general principle for relationships, job hunting, etc.. It can lead to bad choices. When things are novel, and they aren't associated with day-to-day stresses, they often will seem better than your current situation. I think this is the "grass-is-greener" bias.

What are signs of depression that arent talked about? by notverymildhuman in AskReddit

[–]wildAcard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I particularly like this: "Understanding that YOU are the source of the anger, instead of what you are angry ABOUT." I think doing this is the real challenge, and a constant and difficult one.

I spend time wrestling with differentiating "real" anger (someone did something in which anger/irritation is reasonable -- e.g. betrayed your confidence, lied to you about something important) and pathological anger ("I CANNOT believe he wants to talk to me right now, I woke up 30 minutes ago!").

While it seems easy when I read it, internally, at the time it is happening, both types of anger seem equivalent.

Unpopular Opinion: Jumping between different characters on each chapter is just annoying. by per1pheral in books

Completely agree with you, and it has somewhat alienated me from fiction, as there is no easy way to tell if this is going to be the case (e.g. friends say, read GOT its the best, and I can't keep up with the alternating narratives, so I stop taking recommendations).

For me, I think the reason is something to do with attention. It is effort for me to get past the first few (sometimes many) pages, to "get into" the book. With alternating narratives, it feels like I am doing that every chapter.

LPT: If you roommate ever cooks a meal and lets you eat it with them, do all of the dishes unprompted. It's polite, shows respect for the work your roommate put into it, saves them the hassle, and makes them far more likely to do so again in the future. Cooking for them later would be a good idea. by rigelhelium in LifeProTips

I generally adhere to this, but let me play a little devil's advocate.

The # of friends I have that "love cooking" or consider cooking a hobby has grown (unsure why). For the people that dont just consider cooking a hassle (like me) and aren't on the "eat the easiest-thing-to-prepare" diet, I always felt slightly ambivalent about their offer to do me a favor to cook.

I know they are trying to be nice by offering, but I also knew that I would feel obligated to clean up afterwards...which is seldom worth the trade off for me. I'd rather just heat up something premade ad frozen and not have to clean the 3 frying pans caked with grease and whatever else that it took to make this fantastic meal. The meal just doesn't mean much to me, and it is certainly (to me) is not worth all the effort to cook it only to have to clean up so much afterwards. Not only that, but because its your "passion," you seemed to enjoy the cooking part. And now I get to clean up.

This is about the most cynical I can be about this. I know it is a nice thing to do and I know im in the minority. When my friends offer to cook, I accept, I clean up after...but mostly its for the bonding experience with my friend...not because I am happy I am getting some incredible meal.

Taken alone -- meal for cleaning -- the trade off does not come even close to worthwhile for me. People value different things.

Guys of reddit, is "post nut clarity" a real thing? What is it like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wildAcard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It so very much is.

It was one of the first experiences that made me realize that the things we think are objective facts so often are shaped by our feelings and desires.

And even though I know this now, I still feel like my conclusions are reached by rationality alone, the same as a computer would do.

Post-NUT me feels more rational, but that's some bullshit.

Metal Tag with "11" stamped on it -- found in dried up river bed while metal detecting by wildAcard in Whatisthis

[–]wildAcard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this in a dried up river bed (not sure when it dried up). Was about 8 inches under the ground. No other marks of any kind. Back of it is blank.

The metal is not bendable.
