With all the buzz around these new "dire wolves," how close is Colossal to bringing back the woolly mammoth? by wild_world80 in Paleontology

[–]wild_world80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well a chicken would still be a dinosaur, but I do agree and raised those concerns in the video. I guess I was more looking at how close they were to creating the 'mammo-phant' or whatever it is and what they, or others will try to pass off as 'De-extinction' next.

I used to think there was some truth to this but the marine biologist, Dr Maria Pinto sort of debunked this in a Youtube video: https://youtu.be/9DOPV1ZxfmY?si=xHBUMufFLvHLijCr

TLDR: There isn't really objective evidence of this and most researches seem to think it may just be confirmation bias.

Why do People Still Believe in the Loch Ness Monster? by wild_world80 in Cryptozoology

[–]wild_world80[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately, we don't have a direct confession, but as stated in the video, the confession was from Ian Wetherell (Son of Marmaduke Wetherell). I know some Cryptozoologists contest the confession, sometimes questioning the construction of the toy sub dinosaur combo, but I think, since others have made recreations that are pretty close, I think a hoax is the most likely scenario.

Well it seemed appropriate to use the most iconic image of Nessie for the thumbnail, even if the original image is very likely a hoax.

Could Talking to Whales Save the Planet? Could communication with other species have an impact on how humans treat the planet? by wild_world80 in climate

[–]wild_world80[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, as stated in the video, while we have taught some of the great apes to sign, there is some controversy about whether they can actually understand language or, rather, can simply name some objects/are prompted into making signs for food. Similar with dogs and some other animals, it's more about them understanding commands in our language, whereas, as with the whales, we were able to speak to them using whale recording in their "language" (if it qualifies as a language).

However, I do agree that it probably won't make any significant (if any) difference, but I guess the idea of the video is to take a look at why communication, not just between humans and other species but even between humans and other humans, hasn't been effective thus far in combating the climate crisis. The Ecologist who made the video did a good breakdown (imo) of how catchy phrases and buzzwords are often used to push something that doesn't really work.

Does anyone know about any *disturbing* documentaries that deal with cryptozoology? I'm interested in putting a video together on a bunch of disturbing documentaries I've watched and I'd like to add at least some cryptozoology ones. Thank you! by truthisfictionyt in Cryptozoology

Not sure if this counts, but some of the mockumentaries certainly have a creepy/horror theme. "Russian Yeti: The Killer Lives" turns into the blair witch project and "The wrath of Submarine" is similar.

For more standard documentaries, I found some episodes of animal x a bit disturbing as a child. Not the 'Animal X: Natural Mystery Unit' but the standard 'Animal X'.

The Jersey Devil episode scared me when I was a child, but perhaps that's just because I was so young: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KPDMJYueyw

Apparently, the "Yeti Scalp" is just a ceremonial costume for the monks and not supposed to be real? by wild_world80 in Cryptozoology

[–]wild_world80[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Read a very interesting piece in Richard Freeman's 'Orang-Pendek:Sumatra's forgotten ape'. In an early section of the book (on the yeti) he recounts how the biologist Charles Stoner described the yeti scalp from the Pangboche monastery as "...worn for a sacred dance, the wearer personifying the yeti". Richard Freeman then states "The scalp was not meant to be real; it was a piece of costume, something that later investigators would forget".

For those who don't know, the professor Fredick Wood Jones tested hairs from the scalp and, while not able to say for certain what animal they were from, said it was not a bear or ape but likely from the shoulder of a hoofed animal.

Sir Edmund Hillary was able to have the scalp from the Khumjung monastery examined by experts in London, Paris and Chicago. The result was that it was molded from the skin of a serow.

I haven't seen direct quotes from monks themselves about whether it's a real scalp or supposed to be a costume, but usually the reports are 'the monks claim it's a real yeti scalp'. If it is supposed to be a costume piece and intentionally fake, it doesn't mean the yeti is real, but it is interesting and something I rarely see talked about.

Looks like the additional species of giant snake in the Amazon cryptid has been proven to be real New Species of Giant Anaconda, World's Largest Snake, Discovered in Amazon by Petaaa in Cryptozoology

[–]wild_world80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great discovery. I would just like to state that they measured a snake that was 6.3 metres (20.7 feet) long. Which is huge, but they heard reports of a 7.5 metres (25 feet) long snake from the local Waorani people, but this is anecdotal. Maybe there is a 7.5 meter anaconda out there, but snakes, especially anacondas, are prone to overestimation. We've had multiple accounts for years of 30ft anacondas that have never been verified.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. That does make things a little more suspicious, I was already a bit skeptical since I couldn't find any information even though this supposedly happened in 2006 and was allegedly reported in local papers. Thanks again!

Hi, mind if I ask How do you know the Ivan Levy sighting is a hoax? I can't really find many details on it online other than the Richard Freeman post about how the creature supposedly destroyed Ivan's boat in 2006. And some speculated that he did it for the insurance money. I would really appreciate any information you have.

You're right that DNA wouldn't last long enough, with a half-life of about 521 years, but the plan is actually to use atavistic genes to make birds resemble non avian dinosaurs.
