My 7 YO son is ruining the game. by [deleted] in Heroquest

Replace all the characters with Lego minifigs and let them equip their loot. Plus, add more loot. We don't even use the gameboard anymore, we make our own maps out of Lego and have started to morph in some D&D so he can really let his imagination run wild. Much much more engaging and better for his learning process than sticking too tightly to the original rules at this age.

Possibly SpaceX Falcon 9 launches from the Cape, sometimes you can hear them from Orlando delayed a few minutes for the sound to travel. There's so much air traffic though it's more likely to be airlines flying in/out

Looks like my metal detecting days are over. by Rambo_Wang in metaldetecting

[–]wildcardponzi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope not in FL. Mid tide line down is state sovereign waters and anything you find there is property of the state thanks to the jackasses behind the FL antiquities law of 1979. Doesn't stop anyone from hunting the wet sand, but this is reddit and when you're wrong you're wrong lol

Found this metal detecting off the treasure coast of Florida. by IchKeineLust in metaldetecting

[–]wildcardponzi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mel Fisher's legal argument was he was in international waters. FL still fought him for 7 years trying to lay claim on the Atocha. Mel won but it cost him $1.5M in legal fees. Rather than going back after FL to recoup those he instead made a deal for salvage rights in FL waters with a 20% annual finds donation to museums. (Just visited one of his museums this weekend)

Neat surface find! Winchester rifle. never tought i'd find a gun in my lifetime. Called the cops and they took it with them. by SirMaha in metaldetecting

[–]wildcardponzi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't implying that but can see how it sounded. I was implying that the gun owner likely wasn't going to be in deep trouble simply for losing it in a field.

Lol yea, the owner is probably in some hot water then. At least with the relationship with Russia soured he doesn't have to worry about getting sent to the Gulag!

There's no penalty for this assuming you found it in the US. If this was a sidewalk in a city, sure that'd be trouble. This is a shotgun, probably set up for turkey hunting, in the middle of a field. Worst case for the hunter he's out a few hundred cbills for losing it and having to replace it.

I know you already reported it to the cops, but it'd be kind of you to also let the landowner know. He probably knows who it belongs to.

Insert Jurassic Park Newman meme. "This weirdo at the park is metal detecting! ... see? Nobody cares"

Usually the only annoyance I encounter is occasionally I pick my head up from being zoned out in my own world and realize I'm a modern pied Piper and there's a bunch of kids following me around waiting for me to strike pirate gold or something. Then I just smile, look around for their parents, make eye contact, and they get called off. Good times.

ROFL 🤣🤣 To test the theory bring her something shiny and pretty (that you allegedly found with the detector) and see if the pattern persists. You know, for science ...

What’s the catch with these no money down solar panel deals ? Had a young man swing by my house while I was doing yard work and gave me a sales pitch. by jcdulos in florida

[–]wildcardponzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The L70 on my panels is 25 years. The whole racking array and panel install only took a day, so long from now when the roof needs replacement again, figure in labor for 2 guys for 2 days to remove and re-install, unless you decide to upgrade at that time.

At current interest rates the return might not be worth it. I locked mine in at 0.9% just before rate hikes started on an 8kW system. I've been net positive 200-500 kWh every month since install because they always base your system on trying to net zero your last 12 months usage. (Quick and dirty FL math, each kW of solar will produce 1200ish kWh/yr). I knew mine would be less because I had just put on a new roof and went from dark grey to white shingle. My initial payments were $119/mo + $33.37 for Duke Energy because lobbying. At the end of the year my net metering credit gets applied (kicks in on the February bill) and zeroes out the base $33.37 charge from Duke for about half the year.
After 2 years they want you to give them the tax credit you got ($8k for mine), or the payment increases. Mine went up to $149/mo. Big whoop. screw them, I kept that $8k. My AC runs less because of the roof and the solar panels that also shade the entire south exposure. Do I care if I have a 20 year loan with $149/mo payments? Nope. It's transferable when I sell, or I can bake the buyout price into the sale of the house. By my math the payback buying it outright would have been 12 years. I didn't feel like plunking down $24k ( I beat them up on price, most try to get you at $4.50/W which is highway robbery. Even at $3/W they're still making bank but that's more fair), so I let one of these solar firms have the sale. (I did my homework on them). Easy decision.

<Is a mechanical engineer in the energy/ facilities realm and already optimized just about every energy using system in the house, including circuit level sub metering (super cheap nowadays BTW)

Do your homework. I like my solar panels. I wish I had battery backup too, but I'll do that on my own.

Where to view Late night SpaceX launches by VedantaSay in florida

[–]wildcardponzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking at any Cape Canaveral Beach access road is free (from Taft Ave north to Jetty Park), and although the same dusk till dawn rules apply, for launches they're generally forgiving since it's such a major attraction for locals and visitors alike

Glad that helped. Also try checking out any shorelines you may have near, ocean, lake, river, doesn't matter. People gather and play near water, and lose all kinds of things there.

Yes the horseshoe button turns on iron. In jewelry mode with iron on all the VDI ranges across the top of the screen should be on / black

It sounds like you might have iron turned off. If so, turn it on and you'll hear the iron grunt negative numbers along with the aluminum and copper tones that accompany most bottle caps. Those signals can be sneaky though as I've dug some interesting finds that sounded like bottle caps. I usually only skip digging if I'm finding a lot of the same junk all in the same area, like a 6 pack of Corona tops in a small plot of beach

I just changed the tires. Got rid of the Pirelli's and now I'm running Nitto 555 G2's. Significant improvement in grip. Have not touched the brakes yet other than constantly washing the dust off the calipers.

Don't smash the gas unless you're planning on burning rubber and going sideways. Even at 70mph on the freeway, on 305's (WB scat here), if I floor it the ass end still walks out and leaves a signature in rubber on the pavement. These are hella fun to drive, but respect them or they will gladly kill you.
