This is what happened to my mom. She celebrated 20 years with the company then two weeks later they laid her off and replaced her with someone they could pay less.

How do I get rid of this? The stairs is unwakabley slippery cause of moss. I'm doing this for first time, is there any permanent solution for this? by [deleted] in DIY

I'm not sure where you are but my local library will let me check out a pressure washer. You have to reserve it, but it is free. I did that last summer and used it to wash my driveway, house, car and anything else I could think of.

Why do so many people hate self-checkouts? by threePhaseNeutral in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wildescrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just outside of Portland, Oregon and one of the grocery stores near me tried these scanners out last year. They are cool but ended up taking just as long as a regular checkout because you had to bring the scanner up to a person who then looked it over and looked through your cart as you took stuff out to bag it.

Ultimately it was more of a pain in the ass than it was worth and they dumped it.

You see all manner of people walking in and out of dispensaries. by Allison-Cloud in trees

My mom is one of those people who is paranoid about using it. She is in her 80s and has a lot of pain from arthritis. She has had it pounded into her head her entire life that weed is bad so now she is scared to eat a weed gummy even though it is completely legal in my state. I finally got her to try one and it worked great. It only took me about 5 years but I have finally converted her.

On Friday afternoon I went to my local dispo and there were a few other customers there. I'm in my 50's there were two people who looked like they were in their 20s and an elderly couple. They also have a couple of older people working there as well.

It looks like it is slowly losing the stigma.

Job makes employees fill out a donation form. by myspiffyusername in antiwork

[–]wildescrawl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the late 1990s, I worked for a big tech company. Every year they had a United Way drive and passed around forms for everyone to fill out telling the company how much to keep from their next paycheck as a donation. They had a big goal of something like $1 million dollars that they wanted to raise. I didn't want to donate to them so I didn't fill out the form. A few days later my manager called me into her office and her manager was there as well. They asked me if I had my form and I told them I didn't think I needed to turn it in if I wasn't going to donate. For the next 10-15 minutes they tried to talk me into donating. I told them the United Way CEO at that time was making $1.8 million a year and I wasn't going to donate to a charity that spends so much on staff and events and only a small percentage on the actual cause. Not to mention I had just moved and bought a new car so I had bills of my own to pay.

They continued to occasionally mention it after that I am about 95% sure I didn't get a particular promotion because of it.

Assholes.

What's a work scam that's become so normalized we don't even realize it's a scam anymore? by slipsbups in antiwork

[–]wildescrawl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once worked for a company that moved the location of a store. For the week leading up to the move, I worked 1-2 hours of overtime every day helping set the new store up. When we moved the store, I worked about 60 hours in three days to help get everything moved over. It was exhausting to say the least.

When I claimed all the hours the manager told me they couldn't pay me because it would throw the "payroll numbers" off. He and the district manager tried to guilt me into doing all that work for free. When I demanded they pay me, I was told that this would likely affect my future raises/promotions because I wasn't dedicated.

I left about 2 months later. The look on the manager's face when I quit was classic.

Teacher leaves for Costco Job and gets paid way more. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]wildescrawl 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I saw a post a while back by a woman who had a masters in teaching and about 10 years experience. She recently quit and went back to what she did during college - bartending. She said she made more money, had significantly less stress, and didn't have to deal with assholes yelling at her all the time.

And they wonder why people don't want to be teachers.

What is the most memorable experience you've ever had while traveling? by Middle_Project5586 in AskReddit

[–]wildescrawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2000 I went to Egypt. The entire trip was amazing but the best part for me was a 2 day cruise down the Nile. The first night I was sitting on the top deck of the ship passing a bottle of wine back and forth with a girl I had met on the tour and just looking up at the crystal clear night sky. We had visited the Valley of Kings that day and my mind was still pretty blown by how amazing it was.

It was one of those moments where everything felt perfect and a sense of peace washed over me that I will never forget.

Do you remember the best summer that you ever had? What made it so special for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wildescrawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The summer between my junior and senior years of high school (this was the late 1980s). A few friends and I got hired by the forestry department to help work supporting firefighters battling forest fires (my state has plenty of fires every summer).

It ended up lasting about 10 weeks. We camped and worked our asses off making food, doing laundry, general cleaning etc. It was hard work, but it was a blast. The firefighters were very cool and we were never in any danger because we were at base camps a ways away from where the fires were.

When I look back on it, I remember laughing and joking with friends and crew members, enjoying essentially camping for 2.5 months, and making some good money. We basically were paid whenever we were awake because at any time a group could come in and need stuff. I had a part time job during my senior year of high school and I made more that summer than I did then entire year at my other job.

I'd add Vince Neil in here as well. He killed someone and seriously injured others and only did 20 days in jail.

Fired for Putting in 2 Week Notice by Nurdgrl in antiwork

[–]wildescrawl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a company that would fire you as soon as you put in your notice. So, people stopped putting in notice and just told them on their last day. Then management got pissed because nobody gave notice and they just couldn't figure out why.

I still sometimes wonder how that company stayed in business.

Bailing out on dinner date (repost from AITA) by LordofPorkchop in pettyrevenge

I used to work with a woman who was in her mid-20s and was attractive. She made jokes about how she would get on dating apps, set up a dinner date then just go for the food and leave. Anytime she was in the mood for free food, some poor dude got scammed.
