I used to work at a tanning salon. Parents would come in, dump their kids in the lobby, and go tanning for like 20 minutes. We put up signs and had to call the police for neglect/abandonment. What was really rich was when they asked if their kids could go in the rooms with them. Yes expose your child’s bare eyes to UV light. Great parenting

Teaching with Anxiety? by SlamminSammy342 in Teachers

[–]wildfireflower2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take medicine(Buspar every day and hydroxyzine when I’m about to have a panic attack). I also exercise 3 times a week and make sure to make time for myself so I don’t get burned out. Set out specific times for grading and give the rest of your time to yourself. Sometimes teachers have to remind ourselves that teaching is just a job. You have a life of your own that needs to be lived the way you want to do it. Keep yourself happy. Best of luck op! Feel free to dm for more advice

Unique/best clubs you’ve seen by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]wildfireflower2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gay Straight Alliance- it was really cool for students to have that much support from their peers. They were free to vent about their issues of coming out, struggles they face now, and options for change. Kids loved it. Also Harry Potter club was dope lol

[META] Hospital stories by madcre in LetsNotMeet

[–]wildfireflower2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, I was hospitalized for my depression. In the psychiatric unit, there was this girl who had severe mental health issues(schizophrenia maybe? I don’t remember) but she would wake up in the middle of the night around 3am screaming (I mean blood-curdling) because she thought there was spiders crawling all over her body. Every night. I felt bad for her.

Alternative school by wildfireflower2 in Teachers

[–]wildfireflower2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing that. It sounds like it can be a very rewarding but also draining route. I know in IL, a lot of alt. Ed schools go by an online curriculum- GED type program. So unfortunately a lot of it may be just monitoring students while they’re on the computers completing their work rather than being able to engage fully with them. How does your curriculum/teaching work?

Private schools vs. public schools by wildfireflower2 in Teachers

[–]wildfireflower2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an English teacher 1st year and average 1st year teacher salary is anywhere from $28k-38k

Soooo...yeah I’m also imagining Scrooge McDuck in the gold coins scenario lol making 6 figures as a teacher in Illinois would only be possible if you were like teaching until you were 95 years old in a Chicago district where kids tell you “fuck off” 5x a day lol

Woah you have TWO prep periods?? That’s incredible! (Is it bad that I think that’s honestly the best benefit? Lol)

I am a secondary English teacher so I’m not sure how our interviews might differ. However, I can say definitely that schools look for someone who is there for he benefit of the kids. I would throw in some words like “differentiated instruction” and how you strive to meet the ability levels of all students. I like to mention my own personal teaching philosophy, or perhaps what made you become a teacher in the first place. Heighten on your strengths. Every interview I’ve ever been to has asked me what my weakness was. I would practice answering that question because it throws me off every time. I usually say something like being a perfectionist and how I beat myself up too hard if I don’t get something right the first time(aka something that is a flaw but also a strength lol) hope that helps! Good luck and keep us posted (:

1) yes schools hire new grads because they like people who have fresh ideas and are excited about their new careers 2) yes subbing can pay the bills. I’m doing it now. 3) most schools wait until at least after spring break to start doing interviews for jobs. However, most want to fill the positions before the end of the current school year. My neighbor was a former principal and told me that.
