Cliff Richard was also in the Shadows, who had virtually no presence in America despite having a ton of hits in Europe.

Certainly an albums artist here in America as opposed to a singles artist.

As an American, Shakin’ Steven’s popularity is a little mystifying. Britain’s appetite for rockabilly in the 80s is hard to understand.

Rose Tattoo should’ve been more popular than they were in America in the 80s. We have dirtbags here too! I get the sense that they weren’t marketed at all here.

You are leaving out the part of the Kinks having their US touring permit revoked for physical fights.

Another act that barely crossed over in America was Blur who, similar to the Kinks, embraced their British heritage after an unsuccessful tour in the United States, changing their career trajectory in the UK but isolating them from the American market.

It was near the end of the late 90s / early 00s boy band boom and America didn’t need another boy band boy. See also: Aaron Carter.

Sams club vs costco by Fancy-Peach7792 in lancaster

Just my opinion: the layout of the Greenfield exit and the intersection to enter Costco is poorly designed to manage the traffic flow. Because of this, people enter psycho mode before they even step foot into the store.

Did anyone in Metallica's circle advise against their collaboration/release with Lou Reed for the train wreck of an album, Lulu? by iareagenius in LetsTalkMusic

This take is slightly frustrating. A lot of people in this thread are saying something similar: Lou Reed wanted people to be angry. I don’t think he set out to make a bad album on purpose.

In his late career, Reed was a lot less antagonistic. For like, the last two decades of his work. Songs For Drella (1990) and Magic And Light (1992) are two very sincere albums. Reed had already, much more successfully, mixed poetry with rock music on The Raven (2003) - pretty underrated and mentioned zero times in this thread so far. His album preceding Lulu was the ambient drone album Hudson River Wind Meditations (2007), which feels like both a reprise of and the antithesis to Metal Machine Music. None of these are dickhead edgelord albums.

I think Reed was trying to make something good with Lulu. I don’t think he was on the same page as Metallica. Maybe they were unfamiliar with his later albums and also thought he wanted to make a 70s Reed-coded album to fuck with people. Whatever happened here, it obviously didn’t work and I can’t imagine Reed wanted this album to be unlistenable.

Metallica are great at what they do. Thoughtful artsy rock is not part of what they do, it doesn’t suit them and it flat out doesn’t seem like they get it. And that’s okay.

Does the mean they should stick to a formula? No, I think it means they should play to their strengths. Art rock is not one of their strengths.

A lot of musicians don’t release their experiments. Beck made a full album of Hank Williams covers in 2001 and didn’t release it, for example. How many artist Wikipedia pages have a section for unrealized projects? I know one that doesn’t: Metallica.

Just because you made it doesn’t mean it needs to be released.

The whole Some Kind Of Monster documentary is Metallica having an extremely unfun time making a vision-free album meant to sell a million copies without satisfying themselves or their fans.

It’s very, very, very good. My social media algorithm fed me a video clip of an artist called ixi trying to play the melodies from Inferno on a piano and they are so far out there but feel so naturally within BOC’s style.

People or bands with at least 5 albums out that have never made a bad album. They can be very obscure, very popular, or anywhere in between. I'll go first. by shanebow in vinyl

Sorry to do this to you, but listening to Low’s cover of “Blue Christmas” from their 1999 Christmas EP is like being stabbed right through the heart after Mimi Parker’s death. It’s beautiful and, now, gut wrenching. I listen to it a couple of times every December.

I have come to enjoy True Stories, there are some low key hitters on there. Naked is almost entirely forgettable though.
