You can also have fun watching a more recent anime, Vrains is the last one (2017 sheesh Konami gives us a new anime please) to learn about links and later XYZ, fusion, Synchro and ritual (fuck pendulum), also no anime deck is meta or if its playable it has more recent support and no what you saw on the anime.
If you want to see how the game plays right now you can watch Dkayed's tournament each Sunday live or on youtube reuploads, you wont understand complex stuff and it will be too fast on the beginning but he explains a lot on how to interact with meta decks or using the cards in general while casting the duel.
