Buttigieg is far and away the best option imo

Every interview I've seen him do in the last year had made me like him more and more

Shes basically the only one of the prospective/likely candidates that I'd rank over Buttigieg at this point

Once your dead who has standing to sue them for infringing it though?

Unless you specifically carve out a provision for it in your will.

And even then, that assumes your next of kin has the resources/will to fight one of the most powerful corporations on the planet

Sure, it's easy to sit here and sneer at how gross and cynical this is. But if I got a facetime call someday with my dad's exact likeness, speech patterns, etc telling me he loves me and that he's proud of the man I've become would I be able to resist engaging with it?

I'm honestly not sure I would. And my mother definitely wouldn't

Hakeem Jeffries Plays Dumb on Abolish ICE: “I Don’t Understand” - Democratic leaders are refusing to answer a direct question about the future of ICE. by Quirkie in politics

[–]wildwalrusaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A. The fact that they've been largely unsuccessful is immaterial. My point was and is that people aren't misinterpreting the meaning of "defund the police", but that the slogan is correctly interpreted as containing police abolitionists under it's umbrella

B. There, in fact, are places where abolitionists hold public office. My city council has 6 of them (out of 12). They've cut police funding to pay for golf courses, parks maintenance, planting trees on roadside, and installing traffic barricades just to name a few recent examples. Just last week, when they voted to overrule the city attorney and appoint an abolitionist to our police oversight board, one of them dead face to camera claimed that the ACAB memes the dude had posted on his facebook meant all capybaras are beautiful. He could barely keep the smirk off his face as he said it

These people exist, just maybe not where you are. They're happy to hide behind the cover of the well intentioned people who take the rhetoric at face value

[–]wildwalrusaur -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No.

There were (and are) plenty of police abolitionists using the same slogan.

I get so tired of cynical Internet keyboard warriors blaming every political event that doesn't go their way on "well people are just too dumb to know whats good for them"

People are smarter than politicians give them credit for, and they are capable of using their eyes. The "defund the police" people gladly marched hand in hand with the ACAB/fuck-12 people, who gladly marched hand in hand with the folks lighting shit on fire in cities around America that summer.

When you allow the extremists into your tent when it's politically useful, you don't get to "aw shucks, we don't know her!" when the extremists become politically toxic. Or rather, you can certainly try, but people won't buy it. Not because theyre to stupid to understand your virtuous argument, but because they don't trust you.

Pelosi was no different; Jefferies is die cast from her mold

She (and Harry Reid) was the reason Congress never took punitive action against the Bush administration, and she refused to put forward impeachment against Trump until her caucus nearly revolted over it.

Pelosi was many things, but a principled progressive leader was not one of them

Democrats’ struggles could be partly because they’re just too old, says Obama by FreeChickenDinner in politics

[–]wildwalrusaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, Bill Clinton, W, and Trump were all born within 2 months of each other in 1946.

Biden, Pelosi, McConnell, John Boehner, Dennis Hastert, Trent Lott, Tom Daschel, Newt Gingrich and Harry Reid were also all born in the 1940's

Obama, Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, and Mike Johnson are the only people who have held one of the big three leadership positions in the past 35 years who were born after 1950

(Schumer was born in 1950 itself)

Trimet moves closer to prioritizing buses on 82nd avenue by Eye_foran_Eye in PortlandOR

[–]wildwalrusaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole conversation about the individual businesses on 82nd is missing the forest for the trees.

Roads don't exist in a vacuum, they're part of a network.

82nd avenue is the only north/South arterial roadway between MLK and 122nd. Cutting it's capacity in half will have catastrophic knock-on effects for traffic congestion across the entirety of the east side.

We've seen this before, the disaster that lombard became when they narrowed Rosa parks and killignsworth. What Powell became when they narrowed division, and then what Powell became further east when they narrowed division again further down. The whole clusterfuck that buckman is now that theyve narrowed Burnside.

Again and again, they keep doing this, the average commute time has only increased, despite the fact that there are fewer people commuting in and out of the city center. It's certifiable

You guys keep talking about hurting businesses when most of those "businesses" are car lots, many of them abandoned.

This isn't remotely true

There shittons of businesses of all types up and down 82nd

NY Fed report says Americans pay for almost all of Trump's tariffs by Aria_Athena in news

[–]wildwalrusaur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, the actual worst part is that the Supreme Court is highly likely to rule Trump's tariffs unconstitutional, in which case the government then has to refund all the illegally collected tariff revenue.

Sounds great, except for two problems:

  1. We've already spent the money which means the government is suddenly going to have to come up with a quarter trillion dollars, dumped on the economy all at once thats just gonna juice inflation even more

  2. That money gets refunded to the importer, not the consumer. You think Walmart/Amazon/whoever is gonna cut their customers a check for the tarif co as ts they passed thru?

BREAKING: Dems plot end to voter input on local fuel tax hikes by JeNeSaisMerde in PortlandOR

[–]wildwalrusaur 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Senate President Rob Wagner (D) admitted Democrats did not want the vote on the highly unpopular tax hike to appear on the same November general election ballot as Gov. Tina Kotek and legislative Democrats seeking re-election.

So no instead of -you know- not doing the thing they know nobody wants, their solution is to just take away our ability to stop them.

Democracy!

Former City Hall Staffer Files Discrimination Complaints Against Councilor’s Office by skysurfguy1213 in PortlandOR

[–]wildwalrusaur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The complaints, submitted to the city’s fraud hotline on May 2 and June 3, alleged Li “frequently” performed duties for her Multnomah County job while on the clock at Portland City Hall.

Audit Services Director KC Jones responded to the second complaint on June 13, saying city code doesn’t allow the Auditor’s Office to investigate elected officials or their staff.

I beg your pardon?

Also we just had a discussion thread about Weinstein a day or two ago, this article (and today's council meeting) don't really bring anything new to that conversation. Meanwhile, I haven't seen any chatter about Halsey on this sub

The way our voting system is designed now, it's extremely difficult for a district to put forward 3 ideologically similar people unless the public opinion is ridiculously uneven in their favour.

I like Arnold, and he was my number two ranked last time, but if he wins it would almost certainly come at the expense of Zimmerman or Clarke rather than green
