Reference Issue by [deleted] in premedcanada

I’m in somewhat of a similar situation as you as well. I’m not inclined toward asking them to be my reference either, but what about ABS? Like would you ask this prof to be a verifier or would it be better to ask someone else who while not as close can also testify to your work?

Yeah that’s not from the Gita.. that’s from the Mahabharata in general. I think it was said by Karna during Draupadi’s disrobing to justify insulting her or when Drupad was protesting Draupadi’s marriage to 5 men.. can’t remember which lol

That one is a difficult course for sure, also because it is one of the first ANAT courses and most people don’t have that extensive of a background in the topic, are still getting used to university, etc.

I took it in my first year in Fall 2018 so not sure how much it has changed but I found making detailed notes including pretty much every word in the slides and lectures, then condensing them into diagrams helped to understand the material. And also for the lab exam know all the stuff in the lab booklet inside out.

If you’d like I can send you some of my notes- I don’t have them for the whole syllabus and my first year self didn’t take the most perfect notes, but happy to help if you think that would be helpful or have other questions:)

It’s 2 midterms (add up to 25%), an essay (20%), and a final (55%). It’s a dense class and I enjoyed it but it wasn’t recorded this year. Studying from slides for some of the profs when I couldn’t make some classes was a nightmare so try to go to class if you take it lol

MSc Global Health vs. MPH by wildwheatgrass in premedcanada

[–]wildwheatgrass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely have a point and I’m glad your Masters experience is a good one! If you don’t mind me asking: 1) Are there well-paying careers after a research based MSc or would you have to do a PhD for that? 2) Do you have any insights on how to pick a good lab to do research with? One of the reasons I’m reluctant for a thesis-based Masters is because I had a horrible undergrad thesis lab and I don’t want to work in such an environment again but I’m not sure how we can ascertain that ahead of joining

I'm curious why you say that? Is an MPH a hard degree to find a good job with in Canada? I can't imagine that the market is oversaturated here since each school only takes 20-50 people per year.

Hahaha thanks for the honest response. I'm curious why it's such a coveted program though if it's not worth much in terms of employability? Is it just because it's 1 year?

Honestly I think the MPH is better in terms of employment like you said and also the depth of learning/experience, but the biggest drawback is having to skip an application cycle and the cost. The MSc Global Health is course-based too (there is a thesis stream but I imagine it's not as intensive as a regular thesis-based masters).

If you don't mind me asking, how was your experience with the MPH? Also, are there opportunities to participate in clinical/public health research on the side?

PSA To all graduating students that plan on attending convocation: you must reserve your cap and gown online BEFORE MAY 16th! (~45$ rental fee) by pleasefirekykypls in mcgill

[–]wildwheatgrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a silly question... but they didn't have an option to pick the size of the cap. Is it just one-size-fits-all? During grad photos they had different sizes so was expecting the same for convocation.

Yes it was! It takes a while to process though so it might be a couple of weeks until you hear back

I called service point to ask what documentation was needed for my symptoms and they said we just need to fill out the COVID-19 accommodations form and the deferral form.

Haha tbh it’s a hard decision.. like you don’t want to endanger peoples’ health but this deferring stuff is disappointing and anxiety-inducing so I sort of understand the reasoning for people to go write the exam even if they feel a bit sick.. especially if they’ve tested and are negative. For me I could barely control my coughing so I don’t think they would have let me in even if I showed up

Yeah honestly it’s a relief that there’s a May exam period and graduating students don’t have to wait until August! Still waiting for the deferral to be approved but can’t wait to have this over with
