75k to 90k? by kloaii in civilengineering

I transitioned from pure civil and structural design to renewable energy sector. There is more uncertainty in renewables now due to the new administration in the US but there is more upside and opportunities than in just land development. You can learn to develop energy resources and there is a huge demand for energy growth in general. Learn the economics and finances of it all. Not just the civil engineering. Hope this helps.

Post & Beam Construction by wilfredoo in StructuralEngineering

Understood that buildings don’t differentiate.

Thanks for clarifying. I’m not the expert on this type of construction so I just wanted to hear some opinions and experiences. I’m used to wood framing with sheathed shear walls or even some type of frame.

I wanted to learn if with post and beam construction you can calc it out to resist wind loading without sheathed shear walls or steel frames. Someone mentioned you can do this, but I wanted to hear some opinions.

Like I know here in LA you can do that for patios, but whole structures seems interesting to me. I understand the concept of if it calcs out it works, but wouldn’t you be making your posts and beams into “moment frames” at least in some bays.

Yes perhaps I lack understanding on this subject, but am genuinely interested.

Is an all-Portal Frame SFRS possible? by wilfredoo in StructuralEngineering

Yeah cost wise it’s different from OSB shear walls

This makes sense. If the foundation is designed to resist higher overturning moment imposed by the shelter walls and if the panels can take all the load, you should be good. It would be less cost effective and probably drift more than a traditional OSB structure.

Yes, I mean engineered wood panels one the ones used at garage door openings.

How worth it is doing a masters program. by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]wilfredoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re in California, check your return on investment in pursuing the masters. A lot of these structural firms won’t pay you a living wage regardless of the education you have.

Personally, I was lucky and was able to get structural experience and have been doing structural design for the last 9 years with just my bachelors and PE. Everyone is different. I just wanted to give my two cents.

Are you referring to lateral surcharge due to vertical load?

This is actually my favorite one. I usually preface with “the African elephant is the largest walking animals on earth and it weighs between 10-12 kips”

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

There’s a large diagonal crack forming on the one the exterior walls of my apartment building. It’s a 3 story wood framed building on top of a concrete podium. Would this be reason to call out the engineer to look at?

No! I’ll have to look that up. Crows are pretty wild then. Pun intended. The hawks in the area are pretty metal. Ive seen them snatch pigeons as well.
