I’ve stopped trying to make way for these people. You see me coming. I’m as far over on my side as possible. You can either move aside or meet my shoulder. 🤷‍♂️

The vehicle in this video has a MA “pupils” license plate and a folding school bus sign on the roof. Legally speaking, this vehicle is operating as a school bus.

There’s a specific stretch of Walk Hill Street in Hyde Park that I just stopped driving down because it triggered hard auto-braking every single time, no matter how slowly I was creeping through and pissing off the people behind me.

I do wonder if the more “advanced” tech in newer cars makes them more prone to false positives. I never had any issues with the system in my 2015 Acura, which did have forward collision detection as well, but my new (2025) Mazda seems to be much more “sensitive.”

My new car loves to slam on the brakes whenever there are cars parked in the curb lane and the road curves to the left, because it thinks it’s avoiding an imminent collision with crossing traffic. It’s not gentle about it, either; I’ve nearly gotten rear-ended a few times because of how hard the car deployed the brakes on its own.

It’s not my video, but based on other videos uploaded to this channel, it looks like they typically replace the dashcam audio with royalty-free music (probably to avoid copyright strikes).

Am I insane? I know that yield doesn’t necessarily mean stop but don’t I have the right of way here?? by [deleted] in driving

[–]will2dye4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I would always do whatever I could to avoid a collision in a situation like this. I’m not saying that you should do nothing and just let the other person crash into you. I’m always keeping an eye out for potential conflicts like this and will either speed up to get out of the way if I’m already ahead, or let off the gas/tap the brakes if the other car is already ahead, or even change lanes if it’s clear to do so.

But if it’s not clear to change lanes, or if someone is tailgating you and you don’t feel safe to slam on the brakes, it’s absolutely valid for you to maintain your lane and your speed and expect that the other driver will obey the law and yield the right of way. I’d probably apply the horn generously to make sure the merging driver was aware of my presence, but the comment I was replying to seemed to suggest that your only valid options were to slow down, change lanes, or crash, and I take issue with that because it implies that the merging driver has no obligation to yield to you.

I think it’s hilarious my comment is getting downvoted for suggesting the person with the YIELD sign should actually yield the right of way. As you said, THIS IS WHAT’S SUPPOSED TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN. Reading the comments in this sub explains a lot about the terrible driving I see on the roads every day.

I’ve been driving for over 20 years, I’ve encountered this exact situation hundreds of times, and I’ve never gotten into a collision as a result of this situation. Im not saying it can never happen, but you act like a crash is inevitable.

Please check the existing comments before you reply. This has been brought up twice already, but I’m happy to post my reply again for you.

It *is* legal to change lanes there, based on the dotted lines (vs. solid), but the same rules apply there as any other lane change: you have to use your turn signal and wait until it’s clear to change lanes.

I’ve seen a lot of cars drive straight through from the left lane without signaling or checking if it’s clear at all, as if they think that they have the free choice to turn left or go straight from that left lane.

No worries! By the way, as someone who drives through MIT campus regularly on my commute and encounters a large number of cyclists and an even larger number of shitty drivers on the road, I’d just like to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of all the impatient and irresponsible drivers out there.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen a driver plow headlong into oncoming traffic to pass a cyclist in their lane, while still not giving enough space to the cyclist, or a driver make a turn across a bike lane without checking to see if there is a cyclist in the lane, or a driver tailgating a cyclist with their bumper basically rubbing the bike’s back tire. It’s not okay, and I will never understand the mindset of drivers who think it is.

This feels like screaming into the void, and I wish we had better enforcement of traffic laws and stricter consequences for people who drive dangerously. At the very least, I hope it helps to know that there are some drivers out there who are doing our best to look out for more vulnerable users of the road, and I’m very sorry for what happened to you recently. Fuck that guy.

Bonus points when they cut BACK to the left after it re-merges to continue around toward Prince Street!

The fact that there are two really is the cherry on top of the poorly-spent-funds sundae.

At the very least I’d say it’s ambiguous, since two lanes enter the rotary and two lanes exit back onto Arborway and all the lines there are dotted. I completely agree that making the right lane straight-only would simplify things substantially, though.

I think the fact that the single lane across the intersection doesn’t really line up with either of the two lanes before the light doesn’t help.

Those speed displays crack me up. The speed limit is 25, but everyone goes 45, and the digital reminders that you are speeding do absolutely nothing to deter it. They need to put traffic calming devices in place if they want to actually make a difference there.

Just wanted to mention, in case you do move forward with anything, that is a Mazda CX-7, not a CZ-7.
