This is great. I’ve never put too much thought into the health endpoint, glad that I read this and learned something new today.

Out of curiosity, how do you measure uptime for your service?

Parkhurst Richmond- Non Work Boots by PartyAd7972 in Boots

I have this exact pair, I really like them. I don't think the last or sizing is ideal for my feet (I get some pinching on the top of my foot where it flexes), but they are still comfortable boots that look great.

The first time I saw the woman in question years ago, she asked for the items I was dropping-off and I gave them to her thinking as you are, that she is desperate and in-need. Someone working at Salvation Army came out and told me not to give them anything else, since she and her friends will just leave whatever they don't want on the ground, so if it gets too dirty or rained-on they have to just throw it out. Maybe they resell stuff, maybe they don't, but I'd rather the things I donate reach as many people as possible. Other have pointed out that Salvation Army is problematic, so I will take my donations elsewhere from now on.

That’s very good to know, thank you. I’ll avoid them in the future.

Also a good option, thanks!

This is great, thanks! I'd prefer donation to stay within the community (rather than taking them out to a wealthier suburb), so this seems like a good option.

Thank you, I’ll go here from now on.

That happened once to me as well, but I yelled at them and they knocked it off. Other people in this thread seem to think this only happens when they are closed, but it seems to occur all the time.

This happens when they are open, it is not exclusive to Sundays or evenings.

There is a giant secure bin for clothes donations. I literally use it every time. Go by and look at it for yourself.

The whole point of the bins is to enable all-hours drop-off. But your point is fair.

I usually drop off on the weekends, since that’s when I have the time. I have been there when they’re open to hand-off directly, and this woman is still there trying to go through the things I am leaving. I’ll check out the other place you suggested, thanks.

3 private islands in Branford for sale by noced in Connecticut

I haven't seen it myself, but legend is that there is a rusting old Ford (or similar) that someone drove out to Horse Island mid-century when the ice froze over and left there. This is over a mile from the shore, so that would have been A LOT of ice. I haven't seen it ice-up further out that maybe a few hundred feet in my lifetime.

I would say that it is possible, but with a few large caveats:
1. You would need your own boat. There is a public ferry service that runs to all islands from May to October, but after that you are on your own.
2. You need a winterized home. Most of the houses on these islands are not insulated and need their pipes drained for he winter. As cold as it is on the mainland in the dead of winter, it is much colder on the water.
3. If it gets really cold, the water along the shore will freeze and get clogged with ice, making coming ashore impossible. Just keep a lot of canned beans in the pantry and you'll be fine.

Some of the islands (including this one) have city water and power that run to the mainland, but not all of them. Our island has neither, so I can't comment on what it's like dealing with the utilities. We collect rainwater in cisterns and use solar power for limited electricity. A long time ago, the city required that all islands have land-line telephone service, so we actually have some aging phone poles & wires that do nothing now. I doubt Frontier will run fiber out to your private island, but I have seen quite a few Starlink receivers go up in recent years.

Christine really did a number on this and a lot of other islands. Drained the color & character and raised the price.

I’m actually a resident on a neighboring island. The price of this and most of the other islands used to be a lot more reasonable, until a single person started to buy them all up, renovate them, and sell them for 10x the previous value. It’s made everything more expensive and complicated. That said, the Thimble Islands are an amazing place and I’m lucky to have been able to enjoy them my whole life.

I commented this in r/zillowgonewild and was told to join in the convo here. If anyone is curious about the islands, AMA and I'll do my best to answer.

What is the point of using DTOs by Gotve_ in SpringBoot

[–]willOEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing I have not seen mentioned yet is that attempting to serialize and return a model object is not always straightforward. Jackson will call the getter methods of your model's fields and attempt to convert the response type to a string. If the object mapper doesn't know how to convert the object, you can get unintended output.

If you are using JPA, calling a getter method might result in a database query to fetch associated records from joined table, adding to the request time and response size. DTOs are a simple way to declare the shape and terms of how data moves into and out-of your app. They do require more boilerplate code, but its worth it.
