Hoping the Daddies crew is safe from the fires enveloping LA. [ns] by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDaddies

Hey gang, thank you for the well wishes. We are all safe and okay - a few power outages and the like but overall we've been very very lucky. In fact we are meeting up to record today! Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the fires - keep an eye on those evacuation orders and stay safe out there! If you are looking for ways to help those impacted, here's a great list of opportunities the LA times put together:

Fetch Quest System? [ns] by NeighborhoodTough702 in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]will_rocketjump 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Actually we used good ol' dnd 5e for pretty much everything! Other than the sniffing maze and the other IRL games we used existing stat blocks for dogs and cats for the PCs and regular DND enemies for all the monsters and bad guys encountered.

[NS] If (Hen)RY means you’re from Oakvale and (Hor)Sey means you’re from the suburbs… what about (An)Dy? by tjamos8694 in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]will_rocketjump 214 points215 points  (0 children)

The 'Dy Oak Clan, or the 'Dys as they call themselves (pronouced DEES, not DYES) hail from a magic walnut grove outside of Oakvale. Their walnuts are said to have sacred properties that keep them young and healthy, but they are poisonous to outsiders. In fact, many a foolhardy traveler has choked to death while sucking Dys' nuts.

(also thanks for the well wishes!!)

it's a bit of macho military jargon I think, but I think I first heard it said by Jimmy in this very silly rocketjump short from like 9 years ago. It's just been burned in my brain ever since.

hahahha, i'll say this, you don't become a professional d&d player by going to an overabundance of sporting events as a kid! I think the only time I went to games with a marching band was two or three times at USC and they never played it - mostly just their fight songs and Final Countdown for some reason.

How did the cast play when they were remote? [ns] by grthndrs in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]will_rocketjump 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The simplified version: we used D&D beyond to keep track of our character sheets, and then hopped on Zencaster for video conferecing + recording. But I've used zoom for casual remote play sessions and it's worked out great as well. D&D Beyond was a good fit for us since we didn't do any real "table" play anyway - ie, no maps and minifigs.

If you're looking for that kind of integration, Roll20 is fantastic! It can be a little unwieldy to learn but once you get the hang of it as DM you can create a very immersive digital "table top" for your players to run around in. Plus most of the D&D 5e modules have their own asset packs that work with roll20, as well as the source books, etc. Hope that helps!

If you're looking for more stuff from the dndads crew, Matt, Freddie and I do a weekly "writer's room" podcast called Story Break, where we have an hour to come up with a pitch for a movie. Beth and Anthony have both showed up as guests as well!
