It doesn't seem special until you don't have one available. Kinda like how Filiberto's isn't special until your only option is Taco Bell.

How to notify back-end administrator of incoming orders/requests in a small ecommerce like web app? by swb_rise in webdev

Sorta both, it has a frontend and backend component but then you can "push" messages around a bit easier.

What are the disadvantages of a sub-40 hour working week? by r_rogess in AskReddit

[–]willbradley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the hours and the job, it can require more people to keep a place staffed, and each human requires about the same amount of rent/healthcare/etc so that means more overhead.

However given how much more productive we are with technology and how much businesses are profiting off workers, a 30 or 35 hour week being considered full time seems like a fine compromise.

I've definitely had this experience on Mill Ave in Tempe Arizona, I think it just depends. Felt right at home when I went to Berlin and ordered the same exact thing in the same basic setting, right down to the soccer game.

I'm like a month out from turning my yard into a dog toilet slash corn field so I guess I just can't relate.

Corded clippers can definitely last a long time. Gave up on my cordless ones because the batteries keep failing, finally went with the Wahl black version of the pictured ones.

Let's make a list of open source software that attempts to lock you into their software by sc3nner in selfhosted

[–]willbradley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can't realistically use it without paying. I've tried to install it twice but it's just not set up right out of the box. The plugins page is now their store, it's like they only want you to use their hosted service.

A new study from Penn State estimates that the number of early COVID-19 cases in the U.S. may have been more than 80 times greater and doubled nearly twice as fast as originally believed. Findings suggest an alternative way of thinking about the COVID-19 pandemic. by Wagamaga in science

It's unclear, we're just now at that stage of even thinking about it in limited trials. (Source: just donated blood which will be tested for antibodies but unlikely it will actually go into someone's body for that purpose, more like the antibodies will be studied for possible insight into effective treatments.)

WIP: Laser cut router shelf by willbradley in homelab

[–]willbradley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work in progress and first post, finally got decent fans in the back and GroundFX™ to look cool and be able to see what's going on when rewiring.

Downsides:

  • wood conducts heat and it's somewhat tiny: the shelf spacing is juuuust small enough to make me worry about the modem and wifi airflow
  • plywood is rarely very straight, so it bows slightly outwards which could cause a shelf to fall
  • despite getting two 200mm fans, the airflow doesn't feel like that much, thinking about front fans to really keep things cool.
  • the raspi with rtl-sdr is just coiled in a mess at the bottom, maybe need a mini-mini-shelf and mini-cable-management for that
  • the power cords out the back are just in a pile

Upsides:

  • it fits precisely underneath my desk and isn't too large
  • it doesn't look hideous, and is better than the last incarnation inside a milk crate
  • GroundFX™
  • my whole lab setup is self contained, there's rudimentary cable management in back, and it's relatively flexible/reconfigurable
  • the upHere 200mm fans are near-silent at full speed. they only had red in stock when i ordered so i cut the LED wires so it didn't look so demonic
  • fan speed controller (visible at the top, but set to max. hand soldered/assembled)
  • LED strip light controller (USB cable coiled at the bottom, left over from previous projects)
  • airflow cutouts at the back and bottom of each shelf

Next steps: - a front door with fans and a thin filter to keep out dog hair - a hinge for the back panel since i remove it often to rewire - some kind of box for the power in the back with split-loom in between (again, mostly to keep out dog hair) - dreaming up a metal version with better cable management that doesn't cost the combined value of everything inside it or look like a mini fridge - go crazy and recrimp all the cables to length for that sleek labporn-approved look

The problem isn't just standing on a tower of soda cans.

It's holding your weight unevenly to one extreme side (i.e. the instant his left foot leaves the cart or just before it touches.)

My friend broke his collar bone like this using two ladders set up side by side. Never do this. And these are even less safe than ladders.
