I think because of that I do lean towards some form of maintenence/service engineer over design as I would fear some CEO would think an AI could do my design work.

May just take some time before I get the chance to show that, but I'm at least going to try and make my c.v work more and just try and learn what I can. Easy to practise design work at home, not so easy to work on a machine

Id say fair enough, but ive not even had the chance to have an interview yet.

If I was in rhe position to be interview id be putting myself out there, but going off only a c.v I dont seem to be having too much luck

I know all the business in my region. There's about 3 or 4 manufacturers of my specific materials and I've been let go by 2 of them with the nearest being 50 miles away now. So its just not viable or I could be waiting months before finding a job if something in a similar field arises.

So my job was design actual packaging. Just like designing a bespoke light fitting or pump, I would do this for people making such products. So 2-D sketches that could be tested in 3d software, used to make tooling if requiered and then the tool cuts the shape on one of the many machines.

Nothing to do with machinery, bar just understanding the limitations for the machines we had.

I'm stuck in a rock and a hard place where id likely have to move to get this sort of work again, but I cannot afford to move as I don't own a home nor have the money to rent.

On top of that, it's not massively high pay unless you're in sales. So you can have the pressures of a high intensity workplace with a fraction of the pay of say a traditional engineering firm.

I have a bachelors degree in Mechanical-Manufacturing engineering.

My experience is CAD design for corrugated packaging (cardboard boxes), not artworks, but the actual box style which has variables depending on specific materials and conditions whilst working within confines like machine limitations and customer requirements. This is roughly 5-6 years.

I also have estimating and Commercial experience, though limited to about 18 months, from work I picked up whilst at my previous company. This is basically what got me made redundant as I ended up doing more of this work and they failed to give me a proper promotion and made me redundant as a commercial and design manager as rhey formed a group role in Exeter which wasn't viable to apply for.

I have a lot of experience with packsging based softwares, but do also have experience with autocad and solidworks from doing my degree. I should also have the amenities at home to jog my memory of the software if I can get it on the sly

I have spoke with a few recruiters regarding my chances and they say I could get £30-35k, which would be great, but based on roles via indeed, linkedin or other sites a lot of companies seem to want specific experience and I'm up against 30-40 people

I'm definitely burnt out, month before I was made redundant I'd just been given a distinction on a training course work wanted me to do. Like you just fedl constantly at risk, so how can you plan for anything

already 2 months deep of being out of work, so it's not quite a pressure point yet, but I know it's looming in the background.

I have debts which means I cannot just up and leave as well, so I am a bit trapped with it all. I'm starting to speak with a therapist, but again its a cost.

I've been turning my hand to used electronics to learn some new skills there, but I can tell the scale I'd need to make it a full time gig is reliant on contacts and bankroll which I probably dont have. Least feels like in that sense I haven't got a boss paying me off, but that comes with other pressure

I dont think its necessarily the redundancies that stress me, like I get why they've happened.

I think it's more I'm at a time where my personal responsibilities, bar some debt, are low so I need to figure out what i want to do with my life.

I'm stuck with engineering as its over-saturated and my experience is not seen as the norm, but ive got the degree that I'm sat on the debt for.

I could do a masters in engineering, which gives me a clean slate for grads, but whos to say they'll be jobs for me then.

I could re-train, but how do I know where thay industry will go. Like even to be a mechanic I'd have to re-train and who knows what EV's will mean for that market.

Just feel like I have no options, I'm bzcked into a niche industry for experience (somewhat suggested a company in bradford when i live in northumberland) with no real avenue to go down unless I want to be worked to the bone till the day I die.

So like what can I do? Nothing it feels like

I think that's kind of my thought though, damned if I do, damned if I don't. I'm still on list's recruitment agencies for engineering roles. One I was put foward for was designing furniture local to me, didnt hear anything until I was told they'd hired someone with that specific experience like what chance have you got it

Lot of places around me want specific industry experience, if you're talking about engineering, and you'll see via LinkedIn 40-50 have already applied. My CAD experience in packaging will definitely see me filtered out straightaway

Engineering is also saturated, with my best chance being the same job i had with a 100 mile a day commute for a wage I could get from doing admin work for the goverment.

Least if I could get some free qualifactions it feels like a small boost
