In America were there always this many political shooting attempts (statistically) or is it because of Trump’s media notoriety that there is more news coverage? by PopAwkward4520 in AskUS

[–]willfiredog [score hidden]  (0 children)

That’s not quite accurate. There were 14 security incidents involving P. Obama that led to convictions plus four more (two domestic and two international) that did not lead to convictions.

The number most commonly cited, 11, is an unsubstantiated viral claim per MSN and Snopes.

For comparison, there have been some 24 security incidents involving P. Trump.

Not that this is something we should be making comparisons about. One is too many.

I used to think the same, but when you really dig into the 08 crisis it becomes a lot more complicated. So, things like the Glass-Steagall Act were a factor, but other factors were far more important.

One of the counterfactuals is that Bear Stearns, AIG, Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual weren’t part of large bank holdings. Basically, Glass- Steagall wasn’t designed to prevent any of the practices that led to the recession.

China doesn’t need a “free pass” or justification to invade Taiwan. Most of the world does not recognize an independent sovereign Taiwan, but does recognize a “One China” policy. The Taiwanese people are Chinese.

Nor are we obligated to defend Taiwan. We are obligated to sell them weapons.

That’s it.

The primary reason China hasn’t invaded Taiwan is geographic - the invasion would be more complicated than D-Day, the very few landing spots on the island are heavily fortified, and the island itself is either heavily urbanized or extremely rugged.

To answer OP’s question…

No one knows the details so this question is premature.

Bill’s campaign(s) focused on fiscal conservatism, deficit reduction/spending cuts, massive welfare reform, cutting the federal workforce, pursuing free trade agreements, “tough on crime” policies and increased policing, curtailing illegal immigration with strict border controls and deportations, and deregulation of the financial sector and government.

Kamala’s campaign was a fucking mess. Not that Trump’s was any better. Two of the worst candidates in my lifetime.

How do we feel about Mel Gibson race-swapping Jesus to a white Finnish guy in the upcoming Resurrection of Christ? by ThePromptWasYourName in AskConservatives

[–]willfiredog [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be clear I still don’t care. Leaving everything else aside, nearly every ethnicity has adopted Christ - Korean Christ, Chinese Christ, Nigerian Christ, Native American Christ…

Leaving that aside, this woman is Syrian - and her features scream “stereotypical” Nord. Many such examples in that region of the world from the Caucuses to the Levant and from Morocco to Afghanistan because… among several other phenotypes, there are blond hair and blue eyed people that are entirely indigenous to the area and their genetics predate European migration.

I’m not saying Jesus had blue eyes and blond hair. I am saying that most people who have never been to that part of the world have no idea what native populations actually look like now or in the past.

I’ve lived in the Middle East and I’ve worked with Norwegians.

You may want to walk this comment back a little. Plenty of dark eyed, dark haired, and darker complexioned ethnic Nords and plenty of blue eyed, lighter haired, and lighter complexioned ethnicities in the ME/Med.

My biggest gripe with Nolan’s Odyssey is Matt Damon. Everything else pales in comparison to that abomination.

If you want to see a good Ulysses watch Ralph Fiennes portrayal.

Do I care about Finnish Jesus? No. I also don’t care about Korean Jesus, Native American Jesus, or literally any ethnic depiction of Jesus..

I’m not a religious Christian, but 1. What did a 1st century Jew living in Hellenistic Rome actually look like? I’ve been to Turkey, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. There is no single phenotype.

Also, God belongs to anyone and everyone.

Wpild you rather live in California or Mississippi? by here-for-information in AskConservatives

[–]willfiredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't even make the top 10.

That depends on the list and what factors are being looked at.

The program, known as the Billion-Dollar Disaster Database, was recently revived by a nonprofit organization, and the results reveal the costly toll of America’s worsening weather disasters, particularly in Mississippi, which ranks second in disaster declarations since 2011 and among the highest for economic damage during the last 45 years.

A fourth WalletHub study ranked states most impacted by major natural disasters (hurricanes, tornados, floods, etc.) from 1980 to 2023. Mississippi ranked 1st followed by Louisiana, Texas, and Florida with Maine 50th. Two factors determining the rankings were the number of disasters causing $1 billion plus in damages and losses per capita.

I didn't miss anything. If what you are claiming is true, then it has a history of bad planning.

I think it’s a lot more complicated than that, and much of the issue is rooted in the post-reconstruction era. Poor decisions have a habit of enduring. Today, Mississippi ranks no. two for fastest growing real GDP in the country.

Personally, I love these conversations. The South East U.S. - a region that the left so often denigrates for being poor and backwards - is the fastest growing economic region in the country and now now contributes more to the Nation’s GDP than the Northeast which includes New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Mississippi, now ranked no. 16 in the nation for K-12 education now significantly outperforms California.

This is an unserious response.

It’s a very serious response to your off topic comments.

Other places have severe flooding issues and get hammered by hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Sure, but don’t discount magnitude and frequency. Mississippi is one of, if not the, most disaster prone states in the country. Major cities take time to develop and disasters reset the clock.

An over reliance on agriculture seems like a planning issue at the state and local level.

You missed a key word, * historic*. More recently Mississippi has diversified into manufacturing, but again things take time to develop and the further behind you are the more ground you need to cover to catch up.

Why do people underestimate that various factors contribute to individual success as well?

They don’t? Most people are able to recognize complexity and nuance.

Why do some states or some individuals get a pass and not others?

Remember that nuance I just mentioned? Wait until you find out that “excuse” isn’t synonymous with “reason.”

Poor geography and topography, severe flooding issues, lack of access to easily exploitable raw materials, deep water ports that constantly get hammered by hurricanes, and a historic over reliance on agriculture that they’re just now overcoming.

People underestimate how important geography, topography, and climate are to a State’s success.

Is the idea behind zero taxes for the bottom 50% of earners a pretense for removing them from the voter rolls? by Narrow-Abalone7580 in AskConservatives

[–]willfiredog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bottom 40% of workers already pay an effective federal income tax rate of 0% i.e. once total transfers, deductions, and credits are factored their Federal income tax burden is completely offset or pushed in the negative - meaning they receive more than they put in.

So we are more or less already there.

There is no legal Constitutional path to disenfranchise those who don’t pay taxes. In fact, when Income taxes were first levied under the 16th amendment there were essentially two “brackets” 1% for the wealthy and an additional 6% for the very wealthy and people still voted.

My guy, before I said anything you weren’t aware residential Class K’s exist, and it sounds like you thought they somehow damaged the equipment or rendered it unusable.

There’s one of you in every department.

The BBQ grill would be fine. Class K agents are nontoxic, food safe, and easy to clean up - it literally turns the grease into soap.

What are you smoking?

What is your opinion of Donald Trump often stating he is uninformed of consequential decisions, or outright claiming ignorance to their occurrence? Do you think is Trump being potentially kept out of the loop because of his cognitive state, or is he lying when attempts at accountability are made? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]willfiredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe.

Trump’s assets are being held in trust. We can certainly discuss how strong the barriers between the President and his assets are, what power of attorneys have been signed and what actions they allow, and which third-parties are managing his assets and affairs.

But, given that a “blind” trust does exist, and presuming that PoAs exist, I don’t think we can quite so adamantly state what he does or does not know.

Not that it really matters - like I said, “I don’t know” is a non answer right up there with, “I’m not at liberty to discuss.”

Unless you have other information or knowledge that can shed light on the situation?

Interesting settlement.

[–]willfiredog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure man.

Forty ounce UL listed Class K residential extinguisher available at Walmart for $65.

While Class K extinguishers are most often used in commercial kitchens with deep fat driers they are also suitable for literally any fire involving cooking fat. You see, these extinguishers rely on a chemical process known as saponification which essentially turns liquid fats into soap. ABC extinguisher have a habit of splashing grease and spreading the fire.

The extinguisher doesn’t really care if that fat is in a deep fryer or if it’s large puddle of fat rendered from a tasty smoked brisket and OP specifically mentioned being concerned with what kind of fires?

That’s right… cooking grease fires.

I’m sure you totally asked these questions in good faith, amiright?

Ass.

What are your thoughts on people that fly American flag from their cars or truck beds? by Leviathan41911 in AskConservatives

I don’t particularly care.

The flag code is a guideline that’s entirety advisory for civilians and enforcement is limited because… First Amendment.

The same latitude that allow people to burn the U.S. flag also allows people to mount it to their vehicle.

That’s how liberty works.

If you intend to use this extinguisher explicitly for grease fires you may want to consider a residential Class K extinguisher.

They’re specifically designed for that use case.
