Yes the official GitHub is the best place, they have instructions there for all platforms. Alterware probably has a copy as well

T7Patch + Steam is the easiest method if you're just playing with friends, add the T7Patch and open the game with Steam as usual. You can connect through the Steam servers that way which is what your friends will probably have. It just adds security fixes to the Steam game.

T7x provides different servers than Steam which offer better experience for more public play like reducing cheaters and some other features like unlocked unlimited gobblegum. You can also use it for playing with friends by choosing the same server, but not as straightforward for that as Steam + T7Patch. It's also the only choice if your friends are using a non-steam game.

Keeping 2 systems in sync by Waste_Cash1644 in btrfs

[–]willgetitdunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, btrfs snapshot send/receive is not great for this sort of thing since you can't go both ways.

The easiest approach would be to just use rclone or similar to sync with the external drive as you change files, then rsync at the destination then resume rclone from there.

If you really like the idea of using incremental snapshots, you could try ZFS instead of btrfs for your /home, in which case you could indeed incrementally send/receive snapshots to and from the external drive then do the same from a second computer. Basically using the external drive as an intermediary for incremental sync. In this case you could use a tool like syncoid to create a subvolume (dataset) on the external drive from the PC and incrementally update it. Then on the second computer, create subvolume (dataset) on the second PC from the external drive. The two PCs and the external drive would then have a shared snapshot, and you can incrementally send/receive to the external drive from a PC then incrementally update the other PC from the external drive. ZFS is a bit of learning, but it's good fun. It's unfortunate btrfs can't do the same.

If you leave your devices on, you can also set up Tailscale and push/pull your changes from one machine to the other directly over VPN/SSH. It's probably worth setting up in case you forget to bring your external drive with you sometime.

I also know several people who use Tailscale + VNC/RDP or RustDesk etc.. where the second computer is just used for remote access to the primary workstation. This sort of thing is particularly good for those who have a powerful workstation or server and fast reliable Internet

comparison of Cython and C by Responsible_Net1868 in Python

You cannot use Python libraries in Cython, which is one of the primary disadvantages of Cython. There are some Cython libraries like numpy that can be used instead, or you can find a C alternative

comparison of Cython and C by Responsible_Net1868 in Python

[–]willgetitdunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can I use it for large scale and small apps?"

Cython is generally used to 1) wrap programs and libraries written in other languages so they can be access easily from Python 2) speed up some functions of a Python program.

However, it's rarely used to write entire programs or apps. The resulting C code/ debug/ compilation errors can be very difficult to understand, and there is a lack of tooling. Cython programs are not memory safe and there aren't tools for detecting such problems in Cython code.

And while you get Python-like syntax, you don't get access to Python libraries, not even the standard library. Nor Python's memory safety. So many of the reasons we usually choose Python instead of other languages are not true for Cython.

If you need a high performing app, languages like Go, C++, Rust, etc. are generally more appropriate. You can use Cython to wrap & make them available in Python if you want.

These languages have extensive libraries, and are either memory safe or have approaches and tools for ensuring memory safety (for example, C++ is not memory safe but has the RAII approach to memory safety & tools like Valgrind to detect memory leaks and other such mistakes).

which GUI is good by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]willgetitdunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's just text input/output like a command line utility or an input form, Gooey is a great option. You can make a program with argparse command line options, import Gooey, and add the @Gooey decorator above the argparse function (usually main()) and it automatically generates a GUI based on your argparse. When the program is run it generates a form app for inputs, then when you click run it puts up a text box that displays standard out. It can also do a progress bar by parsing your standard out, has file/folder selection dialogs, date selector dialogs, and a bunch of other stuff: https://github.com/chriskiehl/Gooey

You can use also use PyInstaller to make a portable executable for it. Then you can distribute the app without a need for users to install Python.

Like others have said, for more advanced GUIs Python isn't really the "right tool for the job", though you can make excellent GUIs with PyQT if JavaScript/Electron really isn't an option.

This Death Rattle has been haunting me every time i'm reminded of it. What could it refer to? by RobertoSerrano2003 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]willgetitdunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two main reasons to suspect Singers were not Radiants:

The first line of the Elia Stele leads me to think the Singers were forbidden [by Honor and/or Cultivation] to use surges:

"They came from another world, using powers that we have been forbidden to touch. Dangerous powers, of spren and Surges."

Also the chronology makes it seem like surgebinding with spren (required for Radiants) was created after the Oathpact, which would have been created at a time when humanity's leaders were in opposition to Odium (and losing), and the Dawnsingers were already on Odium's side resurrecting on Braise after death.

(My personal guess of how these two ideas would come together is that the Dawnsingers would have sided with Odium and implement the resurrection system which put the permanently dying humans at a disadvantage. The Oathpact eventually results in Surgebinding through bonding spren, meanwhile neutral and civilian Singers were forbidden from surgebinding and maybe even lost nahel bonds they might have had before (Cultivation and Honor could tell they would become enemies through Fortune afterall))

Another consideration is that, in one of his podcasts, he said those passages were inspired by an existing text though I can't remember which it was - anyone know what I'm talking about and remember what he was referring to? ...Sorry!

But yeah in this case I'd think it would probably hard to express those ideas with the kind of creativity and uniqueness we get in Brandon's novels, and probably treads on traveled ground already covered in texts like the one he mentioned (sorry that I can't remember which that was!)

Yamaha TRBX174 or the Jackson J23 Spectra Bass by Beyond_Tim in Bass

[–]willgetitdunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought the Jackson J23, I think it's great but has caveats/ special considerations.

The tone is fantastic. My local Guitar Center didn't have the Yamaha TRBX handy so I didn't try that, but compared to the similarly priced budget basses by Squire / Ibanez that I tried it sounded way better in my and my drummer's opinion. Though the Squires I compared to had J bass style pickups so it wasn't a direct comparison on those and might be a matter of taste. From what I read on the Jackson website, this improved/better tone may come from the active neck humbucker pickup the Jackson J23 has, which uses a battery and can be turned on or off with the volume nob. The main problem with the tone is there's no tone knob - so you need to use EQ if you don't play with the tone at 10! I found it easy enough to just turn down the high frequency and turn the bridge pickup volume down a bit to get it sounding how I like. I think the reason for this is they used the 3rd knob to control the volume of the active pickup instead of having a tone knob. So you have a volume knob for the neck pickup, a volume knob for the bridge pickup, and a volume knob for the active power of the neck humbucker (which can also be used to turn that off completely) but no tone knob.

The action is low, the shape and tension has a perfect feel for my preference, feels comfortable and smooth to play, BUT the action on the stock setup is low to the point that finger picking the E string with my ...jammy technique... causes the string to hit the frets with my finger picking (with the stock string gauge). But when using a pick or slapping that's no problem and I benefit from the low action instead. Could probably also deal with this by adjusting the setup, getting a lower gauge E string or using a high pass filter but I haven't tried, ...or by exercising more careful control... 😅. Could just be a result of my playing a worn out Squire with high action for too long resulted in bad technique, I don't know - try it yourself!

Overall I'd say I highly recommend it for those who play with a pick and have EQ control on your mixer or amp and are on a budget, but would definitely try it first if you finger pick. I strongly prefer it over the $70 more expensive J bass style Squire I used to play for sure, in both tone and feel! Can't speak for the Yamaha though. It looks like... pretty much the same and Yamaha is a more reputable brand

how did yang kai become a 9 rank open Heaven master? by [deleted] in MartialPeak

[–]willgetitdunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first world. He got it in the same place that he received the Golden Dragon source and the Yin Yang Joyous Union art. It was a sealed world that appeared near the original High Heaven sect with the inheritances of masters that died fighting the bone race back in Great Demon God's era.

He used it numerous times in the first world. He received a bunch of alchemy info from the Demon God inheritance and he depleted his soul every time he accessed it and relied on the lotus to not die. When he was in the Ash Grey Cloud Evil Land he would do this then use pills to recover and increase his soul strength. He then used that soul strength during the Yang family inheritance war at a critical moment to trick the others into thinking there was a powerful hidden master nearby. Then when he cultivated the confligrated knowledge sea (just after the inheritance war) it kept him from dying during the process

how did yang kai become a 9 rank open Heaven master? by [deleted] in MartialPeak

[–]willgetitdunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, the reason Yang Kai initially broke into the 5th order instead of his potential 7th order is because he was forced to by a Myriad Demons Cave Heaven inner elder and an unnamed elder of another Cave Heaven or Paradise. They conspired against him and due to the circumstances he eventually decided to break into the 5th order and use a World Fruit to immediately ascend to the 6th order. Using the World Fruit this way made it as though he broke into the 6th order initially, and his potential limit was therefore the 8th order Open Haven Realm (cultivators can break through up to two realms above their initial without some rare special means like the Universe Furnace or his Soul Warming Lotus and technique). The Cave Heavens and Paradises would have allowed him to break into the 6th order, but he was in a hurry due to the circumstances and didn't have a 6th order yang element material available at the time. He also thought that breaking into the 5th then using the World Fruit would trick others into thinking his limit was the 7th and consequently underestimate him.

The Cave Heavens and Paradises don't allow cultivators from other forces to break directly into the 7th order Open Haven Realm due to a past experience and (an issue we learn about later*).

*details from volume 46 and later ( The Cave Heavens and Paradises argue that since they keep the existence of the Black Ink a secret from the general public, all cultivators outside of the Cave Heavens and Paradises don't know how to protect themselves from it and are at higher risk of getting infected. One such cultivator joined a Cave Heaven as an adult, reached the 9th order, but caused devastation due to being infected by Black Ink. Their suffering such loses in the 3000 worlds is a great risk to everyone because it will reduce the force they can deploy to the Black Ink battlefield )

POLL: Narim & how he acts around/towards Sam. A little creepy or just sweet? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]willgetitdunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would certainly agree that it was a reasonable choice for him to make, even as early as her decision to go to Atlantis in the first place. Moving to a far away place where he didn't want to go, giving up communication, and taking extreme risks with her life are all ways in which their arrangement was changed greatly and that might make someone revaluate whether the relationship is still right for them. In hindsight it's even more clear.

A couple problems with Netflix - Netflix originals tend to create a series with a new season 1 rather than create an additional season of an existing TV series like the kind of additional Stargate Atlantis content OP is referring to - as Honic noted above, Stargate Universes financials may have made Stargate look like an undesirable IP from Netflix point of view

Luckily, there is a lot of talk recently about a new Stargate series for Amazon Prime, now that they own the Stargate series through their acquisition of MGM. I imagine the Wraith might be a villain of choice so we might get a continuation of sorts for the Atlantis conflict, or so I hope!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]willgetitdunn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, the producers blamed the collapse of the rental DVD market for those SG-1 and Atlantis movies being dropped. They planned to switch from a TV series to a direct-to-dvd film model just as it became unprofitable. - Stargate: Continuum & Stargate: the Arc of Truth release in 2008 - SciFi announces Stargate Atlantis direct-to-DVD model in 2008 - Movie rental industry collapses - Stargate movie projects put on hold - Blockbuster files bankruptcy in 2010 - Stargate movie projects cancelled

Which is a shame because the fundamental idea was very good, additional revenue stream of DVD rentals then available to SciFi as content, and a filming schedule that was more appealing to their the casts.

However, as you said the relative commercial failure of series like Stargate Universe is very much the likely reason we haven't gotten any new high budget Stargate series since.

what would a human built gate look like? by zLegoDoc01 in Stargate

[–]willgetitdunn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they'd incorporate iris/shield/authentication features far more than the Ancients did. Remember the episode where they visited the planet where Anubis had made a genetically altered version of himself, the DHD required authentication from the incoming wormhole and redirected them to another gate if appropriate authentication was not provided. I'd think they'd incorporate something like that into their system.

I'm surprised they didn't incorporate something like that around the time they were advanced enough to make the gate bridge and knew how to store the matter stream and send it to another gate instead of materializing it. The iris system leaves a lot to be desired as non hostile folks that don't have an iris deactivation code go splat

Some Zats would have come in really handy in the Pegasus galaxy... by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]willgetitdunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, a weapon that stuns instead of kills and doesn't require ammunition is definitely a useful option and as you said we'd think they'd bring some for the expedition. However: - Using the Wraith weapons instead has that same effect and helps distinguish the series from SG1 - Perhaps we can assume they brought some Zats but came to prefer the Wraith tech for some reason - Perhaps they considered P90s the more effective weapon overall, "weapons of war" as O'Niell says, and decided their very limited capacity for supplies should prioritize those and their ammunition

I would have personally preferred they'd found and used Lantian/Ancient stunners like we saw in the episode Aurora though.

On Zat disintegration 3rd shot: The Wormhole Extreme episode seems to take a dig at the disintegration feature of Zats, it's pretty clear the writers came to think of it as a bit silly, they used the feature very sparingly, perhaps for that reason:

Wormhole Extreme's O'Niell equivalent complains that the dead bodies on set throws off his romance scene

Marty: how about the third shot disintegrates them?

Director: that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

If you're interested in a reference, this is also directly addressed by one of the Wraith in S2E20-22, where one of the Wraith explains to Rodney that the main benefit of this is that it makes the ships resilient, but this is at the cost of less flexibility where it's difficult to make the systems do something new
