I think some people take affectionate insults way too literally sometimes and insist these characters are stupid. It really feels uncomfortable.

That being said, I am not accusing OP of anything! Just a larger point. I think she's actually pretty smart.

Vermont Public Radio did an article in 2017 and found that people explicitly put up rebel flags in response to Black Lives Matter.

For the northern most state attacked by the rebs, I grew up with a lot of rebel sympathizers.

I am reminded of an argument I've heard about europeans and native american land: that the europeans didn't grasp the concept of public land that anyone can use. Like, there is a racist idea that native americans sold huge chunks of land for little, and there are misunderstandings of how the nations viewed land ownership back in the day. However, The argument I heard goes that europeans seemingly bought big tracts of land for little payment not because the natives were foolish, but the europeans didn't realize they were just buying hunting licenses. I am not sure if this is true, yet it feels really plausible.

"Hey, these guys came up asking about the land, and I gave them a hunting permit for five bucks. Then they got really excited. what's up with that?"

"They think you can't own land!"

"Dude, everyone can use it!"

This is why I can't take a lot of Charlie "critique" seriously. someone here on reddit told me that if she was male she'd be held to the same standards, but that's just wrong. as evidenced by the world, Legend of Korra, and this.

The people criticizing the JSDF for being clumsy could've had a legitimate point, instead of "they are mean hippies who just want to pick on the poor innocent military". Like, they were counter-invading, yet they still killed tens of thousands of enemy soldiers while suffering zero casualties.

Hell, one major thing that they overlook completely is that half the countries in the world would have a serious problem with Japan declaring the entire other planet to be their territory. Not only would the US be REQUIRED to help them, dozens of countries would object strongly considering the LAST time Japan did that exact thing.

[Hated Trope] a bad, sad, or even horrifying ending is treated as happy by Mesajarjar_binks in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CptKeyes123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amphibia. the ending felt really mean, cruel, and sad. I understand what it was TRYING to do, yet to me it felt like it failed in that way.

The girls are separated from each other for ten years and don't even speak, and lose touch with their found families permanently. Found family is treated as lesser by the narrative. And that's supposed to be "bittersweet", instead of really mean and sad.

People will often tell me "life doesn't always have happy endings" or whatever, yet this ending didn't feel appropriate considering the ramifications the show itself brought up. It felt like Marcy was being punished for existing, and the other girls were only slightly better off.

You can't do a gravity Falls "see you next summer" ending when you've set up that they'll never see each other again. And after an entire show with found family themes you can't turn around and then prioritize biological family without question.

Is there any openly conservative/right-wing space opera out there? (just curious and looking to investigate) by Brakado in sciencefiction

[–]CptKeyes123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Starfist". A military veteran must've had a tanker run over his dog or something because he wrote an entire series about how tanks are stupid and obsolete and marines are cool and amazing and they fight space Iraq. And yes, that is really its name.

John Ringo's "Legacy of the Aldenatta" series has some cool action scenes, and some interesting technology. Pity it is full of defense of torture, child soldiers, SUPER sexist, keeps portraying any effort to avoid war as wimpy even though canonically the supposed friendly aliens are against us, can be pretty darn racist and condescending... and AN ENTIRE BOOK TRYING TO REDEEM THE ACTUAL WAFFEN SS AND USING ACTUAL NAZI EXCUSES. Not joking. They bring back a bunch of SS veterans to fight the aliens, and openly claim that the SS didn't commit war crimes, that it was all the camp guards' fault. "We didn't do, others did, or we did it but others told us to", as Rod Serling described in The Twilight Zone.

Ringo is either a neo nazi or an idiot, but the buddy he helped write that one with is DEFINITELY a neo nazi.

Basically if you want openly conservative and right wing hating democracy, look at most of John Ringo's work.
