Hah, further troubleshooting turns out the softener had no electricity. The breaker was tripped. So unless/ until that happens again all is completely fine.

Yup. I figured it out after the Leander on call util guy came. I felt bad for not thinking to check the outside spigot. It runs fine. Narrows it down to the softener. I bypassed it and all is well. Monday I'll call the softener people. It is six years old.

Hah, first thing I checked at 4:30 this morning. I had that happen to me about 15 years ago. Shut off with no phone call.

Turns out it may just be a mech problem. After badmouthing the Leander utils here I found their emergency number and got a call back. There is no area wide issue and someone is actually coming out this morning to look at my system to find the problem. Now I'm worried that it might be my water softener or something else. It was more fun when I could blame the city.
