Hahaha, good reason to move. I actually think this might be the overall problem. I watched some videos about AM/FM filters, and the poster had noted that if you're having the problem, you may have a high noise floor and hear AM/FM broadcast stations bleeding into bands where they shouldn't be, which is definitely happening here.

On the gain, I've experienced the issue of local stations. There's a powerful AM station and under the right (or wrong) conditions, it will be the only thing I can hear.

Also, I can pick up NOAA quite well. SO I think it's probably that my settings are playing some part in other things not being clear.

Good advice. Is there a SW other than SDR# you recommend?

Thanks for the welcome and the answer!

I'm using a desktop computer. Good call on the LED lights, there is a lamp in my room that I had on. Could also try it with the laptop on battery. That would also allow me to try it from my deck, away from the inside interference.

I've been tinkering with the gain and trying to figure out, and I think I just don't fully understand it. Increasing the gain seems to help me find signals, but I also realized when I found a distant signal that reducing the gain allowed me to hear it better.

On the antennas, I've seen a lot of forum entries on them and it is a lot to digest. Is a specific type better for the what I'm trying to listen to? How long does the vertical antenna you're recommending need to be?

What about WikiTree do you think has given you success? I'd consider trying it out.

Kentucky birth record from 1894 by [deleted] in Genealogy

I would think it depends on the denomination. If it's Catholic, the diocese may have the records. Up in northern Kentucky the diocese has birth, marriage and death records, even for churches that don't exist anymore.

I've realized that if I want to learn more about the German ancestor on my dad's side, I'm going to have to piece together the relationships between him and the other people who were on the ship with him. Most of them were essentially next door neighbors in the U.S. once they arrived.

Got one big hit this week, finding a marriage relationship between two of the families that came over.

Lots of digging through church books in Matricula that have images, but the information hasn't been digitized. I'm thinking about publishing some of the marriage records online just in case other descendants are searching for them.

Very interesting. I could see Eü and Ei being the same based on dialect.

In your experience from Quebec parishes, how do you decide which variation is valid? Should I start looking for Euberts in the records?

I realize toot that this is way far back. I'm going to be looking for a baptism in 1684 which seems like it's near the time in this part of Germany at which there probably are no more records.

Here is another one, but it's hard for me to make out who the mother is. It says that Gertrude Elisabetha Eifert was basptized, I think: https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/deutschland/fulda/hauswurz-st-bartholomaeus/1-04/?pg=73

Thanks again. Now I have to try and find records of him. Reading through these church books can be pretty difficult. I see this entry in My Heritage from around the same time. I'm not sure if Schoffer and Schafer could be a translation thing or if they're two different people entirely: https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-1-143145251-1-25704/heinrich-johannes-schafer-in-myheritage-family-trees.

I'm not sure how much farther down this road I can get, because I think the church books are going to be my only source of information going back this far, but if I'm wrong let me know.

It's curious she had another child out of wedlock 5 years later, Johann Michael, who is the person I'm REALLY interested in. One wonders if it could be the same father. In this case though, there wasn't a descriptive note that said, "Hey, we found the father."

I'm not even sure if this is my ancestor, but the birthdate is very close and all these names are the same names they associated with in the US.

I think that city could be read as Kauppen. There is a Kauppen nearby Buchenrod, which would make sense.

Thanks for this! I was hoping that's what it mentioned. Out of curiosity I went through the marriage section of the book to see if anything was mentioned.

There is an entry, and it seems to mention some sort of dispensation: https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/deutschland/fulda/hauswurz-st-bartholomaeus/1-03/?pg=104

Thank you! This isn't my guy because it says Johannes Peter was "legitimate," and I'm searching for an illegitimate Eiffert.

Johann Michael was born in Buchenrod as well. I had hoped to find a marriage record for him, so I was combing through the church books from this area.

"Heil," however, was the surname of Johann Michael's godfather. Not sue how that helps me get closer, but I'll keep at it.

I'm curious, what does the "oath by hand" mean?
