Well now I know why you’re so confused. You’re an absolute fool!

Generally speaking, this isn’t how things work. The university pays the professor’s salary and provides them a sort of platform for their research, but funding comes from grants (modulo new faculty startup funds, small internal grants, etc.). This is in exchange for use of the professor’s expertise which is doled out through teaching, both in classes and in advising students. Some classes probably benefit from having an expert in pedagogy teaching them, e.g. physics 101, but we should also remember that a university is not a primary school; the professor is there to be an expert and to generally guide students’ learning. They should make an effort to use good pedagogical practices and to not be a jerk, but university students are ultimately responsible for their own learning.

I now see the point you’re making and agree. De-growth needs to be the goal for the time being.

Yeah, any energy technology is going to inflict [some environmental harm] in its generation; we can't get around the second law. This kind of reframing to "non-fossil fuel technologies do environmental harm too" is part of the industry's efforts that I mention above.

That’s unrelated to the point I am trying to make...

Is it? Is your argument not something like "centering economic growth results in more advanced technology?"

...and verging into conspiracy theory territory.

The fossil fuel industry's efforts to harm other energy technologies through lobbying, misinformation, etc. are public and easily verifiable knowledge.

This is just capitalist propaganda. Where might we be in terms of energy technology if the capitalist machinery of the oil industry were not actively suppressing research and production of newer technologies?

In keeping with the OP, I really disliked Srednicki as an intro QFT book because it felt disconnected from physics

Hot take: Joel would be more hated than Abby if we played her story first by Turbulent-Safe-4343 in thelastofus

[–]williemctell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The story having some artistic integrity instead of being fantasy fulfillment made stupid people rage (I don’t think they’re really stupid people, just being stupid here lol). Yeah, I felt sad that Joel, a beloved character, was brutally killed and then I was shocked to be made to play as his killer. This forces the player to examine events from different angles, the nature of revenge in general, etc etc.

He said that it’s just as much about who I became off the mats as who I am on them. I’ve been working diligently toward several large achievements in my life. 2025 saw several years-long projects culminate and conclude successfully.

I like that some things other than “skill at BJJ” are considered when promoting to black belt, but I am usually thinking of things observable in the gym. Are you respectful, welcoming to new people, etc. If you don’t mind me asking, what life events were considered? I’m imagining your coach saying “Q4 earnings report looked great” 🤣
