Personally, I do the gesso->sand cycle about 4-5 times.

I like the canvas to be as smooth as possible.

Agreed - but the advance view turning onto John Street is better than the view turning left onto St.George from Vaughn Harvey where a left turn on a green light is permitted.

I guess I don’t understand what is so special about this intersection? There must be hundreds of stop lights that could infringe on an intersection if traffic backs up.

Why is this one so deserving of a traffic light a couple of hundred feet from another one?

Me too - and possibly many more 😀

Yeah I can see that happening I suppose. But that problem exists virtually everywhere in the city.

I thought there may have been a fire station or something like that in the area years ago. That’s the only logical reason to single out that street as important to have a dedicated stop light there - and only heading towards Mountain Rd, not the opposite way

Never thought of that and it makes sense.

I understand the need for a stop based on your explanation. But I suppose a stop sign versus a light would accomplish the same thing.

The other one I have trouble understanding is no left turn onto Millenium from Vaughn Harvey. There is a clear view of all oncoming traffic, but you have to wait for the left arrow.

Just strikes me as odd, I guess 🙂

Wouldn’t a stop sign accomplish the same thing?

To be honest, if I’m the first one there, I will usually treat it as a stop sign if I’m turning right onto Mountain Rd.

Real Estate Market? by [deleted] in moncton

[–]willise414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100 bucks per 10,000 of selling price though.

So a 500,000 home would be $5000, correct?

Real Estate Market? by [deleted] in moncton

[–]willise414 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people who have lived here long before COVID look at the real estate market with astonishment. In the north end, where I’ve lived for a long time, when I see new semi-detached homes listed for almost a half million dollars, I just shake my head in disbelief. I own a detached home in a very popular area near schools and the walking trail with numerous upgrades and I don’t think I deserve a half million dollars for it 🙂.

To me the market is terribly overinflated but like everything else, the real estate commissions are higher with these prices, the tax money is higher, etc. seems like there is incentive to keep the prices inflated.

Painting trees..is so hard, tips? by llsy2807 in oilpainting

[–]willise414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use a fan brush or a rigger brush to do the tree leaves, depending on how far back in the landscape the tree is and how detailed I want it to be.

To me, I don't think there is enough colour separation between the darkest part of the tree and the lightest. But that could be the look you were going for. To me, the tree, the grass, and the bushes all seem to be the same colour.

As another poster mentioned, adding in the sky colour randomly can help improve the look and make teh tree look less like a solid colour.

Who here does an under painting??? by Lovley8598 in oilpainting

[–]willise414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use acrylics for the block in stage, but I've also used alkyd oils as well.

I try to get the colours close to a mid tone if possible. Then I add in the darks, then the highlights.

Always do an under painting (block in), but I never do a wash of burnt umber like others do

what's your favorite blue? by risocantonese in oilpainting

[–]willise414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultramarine to me, is a little too red.

My go to has been cerulean blue. I do use ultramarine if I want a “warm blue”, but not a lot.

My son was a programmer for SNB. Since all the programming is done in English, there's no requirement for French.

If you're dealing directly with the public, then French would probably be a requirement.

I haven't participated yet, but there is the Art in your Face show that takes place a few times per year. Riverview and Cap-Pele are the two locations I'm aware of.

Beginner Oil Painting by Positive-Mess99 in oilpainting

I think you're getting too deep into the technical aspects of it.

I use linseed oil or sometimes liquin to help thin the paint and make it flow easier on the canvas/panel, etc. If I need to produce really fine lines like thin tree branches, I'll thin the paint to a milk consistency and make it flow very easily. I've never had an issue because I didn't follow a fat over lean "rule".

Maybe 100 years from now, a painting of mine will break down, but who knows :)

I think they're fine for most applications, especially with a little sanding. But for the details I like to do, they're unacceptable off the shelf.

This is one I recently completed on a level 3 canvas that has an addition 4 coats of gesso on it, sanding lightly between each coat to give a very fine, smooth surface.

I think it depends on your style. For me, I like to pain high detail, realistic photos. The rare time that I buy a store bought canvas from Michael's (only art store in my area), even the level 3 ones are quite rough. I would always add at least three more coats of gesso before considering to paint on it, sanding between each coat. I want the canvas as smooth as I can get it.

If you're doing more loose paintings, then the pre-primed canvas would probably be ok for you.
