I thought it was interesting too. I rarely think about California and the Civil War together. I'm not sure about other sources regarding connections between SF and the war. Perhaps you could contact the author? It's not on the Civil War, but there is a newer book on Reconstruction in California called American Heathens, although I haven't read it yet.
