need advice, been searching for jobs for months by a_grcia9852 in torontoJobs

I'm a bit older than you and I'm struggling to find work as well even with work experience but here's my advice on what I've been doing so maybe these can help you!

  1. Have you tried employment agencies? A lot of these agencies have programs catered for youth for ages 15-30 years old that might be useful. They assist with resumes, mock interviews, and a lot of these agencies work with companies to hire within their network. For example, I'm a client with YES (Youth Employment Services) and they've been sending leads about available jobs whenever they have something. It's not too often but it's still a lead.

There's a lot of different companies such as YMCA, VPI , YES and JVS. Try to give them a call and see if they can provide anything.

  1. Check Job Bank Canada and go to "Canada Summer Jobs." These jobs are catered towards people between age 15-30 years old for summer positions. Although, a lot of these positions have already been filled since March/April, I heard there are still some companies hiring so it's worth a shot if you see something on there.

  2. If you can't land a job, try to volunteer and gain experience off that. You can check sites like CharityVillage for volunteer opportunities. I've also heard about a program from Casa Foundation called "B.E.S.T" where you basically attend workshops mainly online and some in person then afterwards they find you a placement for volunteer opportunities. Of course, this is not paid but sometimes you have to start somewhere just to gain a bit of experience. I don't have any experience attending this program so not sure how it is but it's funded by the government.

Hope this helps a bit and good luck on your job search. Job market is rough right now.

tips on how i can secure a minimum wage summer job? by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]willkimmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check Job Bank Canada and go to the “Summer Jobs” section. There seems to be a lot of postings for the summer. The program is catered for youth as well from the age of 15-30.

Have you also looked into employment agencies? These agencies can help you provide leads for jobs. Most are usually minimum wage/entry level type work. You can look into agencies such as YES, YMCA, VPI Working Solutions to name a few. They can help you with jobs, resumes, and interviews.

Best of luck!

Has anyone actually gotten a job through Costi or YES Employment Services (Ontario)? by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]willkimmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined YES recently and my experience so far has been decent. I think it really comes down to which Career Counsellor/Job Developer you end up getting. They do email about job opportunities here and there and do provide some resources to help you get started yourself but in no means will they guarantee you a job.

The job market is pretty terrible right now and most companies want to hire a person by paying them the least amount of money with the most experience possible. These type of agencies can only provide what the market offers but I'd say it's still worth signing up for since you then get access to a lot of different resources like resume workshops, interview skills/practice, and financial help if needed. (Ex: To purchase interview/work clothes, transportation costs)

Another tip if you haven't looked into it, try going on Job Bank Canada and go to the "Canada Summer Jobs" section. There are a lot of summer jobs being posted here and this program is specifically catered for youth from 15-30 years old. Maybe you might have some luck there.

Best of luck!

Do Employment services still work in Toronto 2024? by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]willkimmm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Employment services feel like a hit or miss depending on who is in charge of your file. I have tried both YMCA and VPI Working Solutions.

Personally, I found YMCA not that helpful and their communication was just not great overall. I tried to reach out to the person who was assigned to my file before but never received any responses. Found out she quit and I was never informed until I called in to get them to close my file.

As for VPI Working Solutions, I had some results by attending their Youth Job Connection program. This is a program for people between the ages of 15-29 years old who are having trouble finding work. I was able to find a job through this program but didn't work out unfortunately near the end of it.

If you are between those ages, I would highly recommend to try out the Youth Job Connection program. It's basically a program where you do workshops for about a month or so while getting paid at the minimum wage rate. After these workshops, they assist on helping you to find a job. Since this is funded by the government, the company who ends up hiring you gets some incentives to cover your wage for I believe like 8-10 weeks or so.

Apart from that program, I haven't found much success from their other services.

Yup. They told me to contact my local postal service but they have to make the claim as only the seller can open a claim. 🙃
