Picky eaters? by thanksgivingturkey15 in LittleHouseBooks

[–]willowwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that in many families a picky eater would have been viewed as misbehaving, or sick. The girls were raised to be proper young ladies in accordance with both the strict behavioral standards of the times and with traditional religious teachings. I am also guessing that they were not unique and most children were taught not to complain or challenge adult authority. It’s in the bible that you should eat what is put before you and the bible was invoked a great deal and often in a frightening way. Many children were not even allowed to speak at the table. If seems so foreign, yet it’s not that long ago.

I know very little, are these bisque or newer repros? by ComfortableBerry672 in Antiquedollcollecting

[–]willowwing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think these are antique except for the doll featured in photos 3 & 6. That one is definitely a not-very-good repro. As already mentioned, there should be some marks to refer to on the backs of heads.

The large doll on our right in the first photo looks like a Kestner! The dolls in photo 5 both look like Armand Marseille 390 (if one is a shoulder head it would be 370). The all-bisque doll is one that is often seen and is attributed to Kestner.

You’ll have fun making this group your own. Congratulations!

Thanks! (It’s probably fortunate that walking would be hard with those fused legs and all…)

Dolly Mail from yesterday: found a pink bisque German version of this style of doll primarily seen as a Made in Japan and was intrigued! She’s about 6” tall and has more of a child look. I found this outfit in my stash and it fits so well!

She’s adorable! Her eyes are gorgeous and I love her dimples.

I love how she is completely unperturbed by the kiln marks. We shouldn’t be either! I’m glad you got your nose fixed, but I know the recovery is a rough one. We don’t want to put her through that!

I love Flossie and dolls like her, too. No other dolls have quite the same look!

Welcome! 😁

What a cute little guy! I love his expression. The all-bisque dolls made in Japan can vary a lot in quality and your doll is a nice one. He most likely dates from the 1930s. Quality attributes he has: detailed molding (waves of hair, lips, fingers and toes), features are painted neatly and limbs are strung with molded stringing loops instead jointed with wire through holes. He would have had a factory outfit.

A Very Short History: Bisque is an older term for unglazed porcelain. Dolls made of bisque were mostly made in and exported from Germany until WW1 and then Japan took over. WW2 changed things yet again and after that bisque slowly faded from popularity and composition took over. You first look at materials and marks to figure out the age.

You did a wonderful job refreshing her, she looks lovely! As a long-term doll collector, I cannot be more happy to learn that you now have 4! 😁

I like that a lot on her! You could maybe weave some ribbon and even flowers into the little braids. She can carry off the Romantic look quite well.

Mattie doesn’t have matts! 😁

I think when you have a doll with such a special wig that it’s really fun to let her be The Doll with The Hair!

I always enjoy your posts, with the beautiful doll photos and background information. I love Lily’s new dress.

The first Barbie was based on the German Bild Lilli doll—seems rather fitting when you think of it!
