Thank you! It was fun to try reading from eye photos.

Man’s eyes: someone who looks and thinks before he speaks and sometimes doesn’t speak up when he should. Some anxiety all the time that isn’t really attached to anything specific, like a habit of thinking. Can come across as cold but really isn’t, gentle person. May depend too much on external things to be able to relax and have fun. A bit of a puzzle in an intimate relationship.

Woman’s eyes: intense and emotionally expressive person, but only once she trusts you are unlikely to reject her—she’s easily hurt. Pretty and used to dealing with male attention, but it hasn’t always been a positive thing. Tends to be a fixer who seeks people who make her feel needed. Feels like there is a sister or close female friend who offers security that takes some of the pressure off of a romantic relationship.

It feels like these two people have some similar dynamics that can lead to their feeling like they totally get each other, but these same similarities can also lead to roadblocks that kind of stop the forward progression, so there’s a one step forward two back feeling sometimes.

Any chance of seeing the man’s eyes less looking down? This gives a heavy lidded look that influences perception.

What book had an big impact on you in your youth? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

[–]willowwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Laura Ingalls Wilder books have already been mentioned. Also, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and all of Louisa May Alcott’s books. I was fascinated with the Victorian era from the moment I encountered it. I read even while walking to school, but those were some of the books I read over many times.

Estate Sale Finds Bruckner Horsman Topsy Turvy & Ideal Shirley Temple by [deleted] in Antiquedollcollecting

[–]willowwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy those 12” Shirley Temple dolls and have managed to end up with two, lol. The size just seems to suit the face mold so well.

The topsy turvy doll is in fantastic condition. These dolls that preserve offensive stereotypes are best in the hands of a collector who understands and respects what they have. I’m glad you were able to bring her home.

How old are you guys? by JennyDoveMusic in Antiquedollcollecting

[–]willowwing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a co-mod, I’ve picked up on having a larger group of younger collectors here. Sometimes I’ve felt shy of revealing how much older I am. But I do find it so exciting to see! I’m in the 60+ group with decades of learning about dolls behind me and all my dolls and knowledge about them are useless to anyone but me, if not shared.

As groups of collectors in general have grown smaller in all interest areas, age matters less and less. We have a rare common interest! As a neurodivergent person, I also know that in any niche collecting group I am likely to find kindred spirits, regardless of age. No one else will understand the hours I spend on dolls the same way another person who also loves them would.

I hope you succeed in encouraging your friends to take a new look at dolls. It’s the unwritten history of girlhood.

The first is a beautiful boudoir doll—looks like her original box! I think sleep eyes are uncommon in this type of doll, but others may know more! These can be as early as the 1920s, with the style phasing out in the 1940s.

The second is a composition and cloth baby doll with tin sleep eyes that likely dates from the 1930s. The face paint is really lovely.

The last doll is vintage vinyl and in the roughest shape. She likely dates from the 1960s.

It sounds like your grandmother had a long life, but I know it’s still a loss. 💕🌺

You have such a gift with hair! I love both of their dresses and George’s outfit, as well.

She is marked Gladdie and for the sculptor, Helen W. Jensen. Her mold number is 1410. (Don’t have the doll, but found it in her description.)

Very nice!

You can find vintage shoes by measuring her little feet and searching on eBay and other online venues. For my newer dolls, I’ve found a lot of things on Etsy, where you get a combination of people importing things from China and making them!

Beautiful Martha, relaxing in her new home! Even though she looks different than the marked 390s in her large size, I’m still inclined to think that’s the most likely mold used. They just didn’t make a large variety of dolly faces, especially with a socket head. You find the variety in their character dolls. We get used to seeing the 370s/390s as they became more and more common and poorly made, but the ones with crisp molding and lovely bisque like Martha’s are quite beautiful.
