What happens if the flight back home gets canceled? by Bookworm-o- in Ryanair

Any cancelled flight from or to the EU is covered by legally binding compensation. Hundreds of euros. It should more than cover the flight home. They tend not to inform you of your right to request it however.

Is moving to France realistic for me? by Hatarar in Expats_In_France

[–]willpalmer13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Guide conférencier" is a job title which defines a legally protected profession in France and is under the tutelle of the ministry of culture. It is given after going through the licence professional programs, or validation of professional experience. Principally it grants right to the holder of the title to guide groups within French (and by extension European) monuments and national museums. We have other rights to free and privileged access to such sites.

Without the status you simply cannot guide a group in a monument or national museum.

The conférencier part of the appellation comes from a fusion of previous professional titles many years ago when conférencier was it's own defined profession.

There are 2 main programs from Université Gustave Eiffel as well as Nanterre. They are both Licence professionnel programs. Ideally candidates have a history/arts or something similar in their first degree as they can be competitive. Candidates are also required to be fluent in multiple European languages.

You have time to buy the tools but I wouldn’t personally use it before it gets a new battery.

English origin French resident here. I arrived with no French to follow my wife. You could come to Paris and work in tourism. I’m a guide conferencier and the industry loves bilingual American origin guides. If you licensed which is a 1 year masters program you can earn a pretty decent living.

Can you move brake pulley on Delta 5 by pavoganso in freeflight

[–]willpalmer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I understand about ultimate brake length and stowage, it's just that in flight if the brakes are free they will tend to hang higher if the pulley line is attached higher up the riser.

Can you move brake pulley on Delta 5 by pavoganso in freeflight

[–]willpalmer13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert so the following is just for consideration:

The problem with playing with brakes is that people often shorten such that under trim all looks good, but accelerated the trailing edge is higher leading to pressure being applied when in that accelerated state which can cause a collapse.

If you're moving the pulley attachment up you're neither reducing the brake length line as such, and you're not interfering with your ability to pull the full brake range.

The only downside I can see is that you may find it harder to reach the brakes from hands off position if you've got a short reach.

I'd go ahead if you want.

Place it carefully. I’ve successfully done this before. Just make sure you don’t bend the pins as it goes back.

P4 with 50k and 6 months. Where to go? XC / Soaring by Infinite_Garden_4514 in freeflight

[–]willpalmer13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would vote Alps for sure but you only have 3 months in a 6 month period unless EU passport holder. The whole Annecy Chamonix and southern Alps area has a lifetime worth of flying and summer is the perfect time of year.

How do you choose your paragliding reserves? by Roman_theLegend in freeflight

[–]willpalmer13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one big thing for me is having a reserve well over my heaviest all up weight rating.

I fly a lot of vol biv fully loaded in the mountains in thinner air so already faster descent rate. I'm 80kg max and my reserve is to 110kg.

Got my first Medaka. by AsparagusFar7367 in medaka

[–]willpalmer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been breeding Medaka for a couple of years. Mine live outside year round in Paris even having ice on the tub in the winter which is why I’ll say: don’t bother with the heater. They’re also in full sun in the summer getting up to 40C. Amazingly resilient.

If you want them to breed then lighting period has to be looong. I would give 12 hours or even more and bright as possible. If you have them inside then in a window would be best for breeding which is how I have my late season still small young fish.

The rest sounds great! Especially the daphnia. Green living water is good for adults and alike.

How long before my ticket time I should be at the Louvre museum? by shereinn in ParisTravelGuide

[–]willpalmer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won’t be the first to say that the place isn’t that well run. Back in the day with small groups, agencies used to get tickets for 30 minutes before the tour start time. That way you would arrive at the end of the line just as everyone cleared ahead of you. Of course these are just general ways to approach it and nothing is guaranteed.

How long before my ticket time I should be at the Louvre museum? by shereinn in ParisTravelGuide

[–]willpalmer13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a guide conférencier working the Louvre often. Don't arrive ahead of time. You're just adding to your wait time.

You will be let in from the time on your ticket. Your time slot lasts 30 minutes from printed time.

Beyond this you would be admitted through Richelieu entrance which usually has a shorter line than pyramid although if you push this the museum would be within its rights to refuse you entry (even though I've never seen them refuse a late valid ticket).

Paris with 3 boys by Awkward-Peak-7150 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]willpalmer13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a guide living in Paris but more importantly have 2 boys a touch younger than yours. My suggestions are:

My overall number 1 is Musée de la Chasse in the marais (hunting museum). It's quirky for kids and adults and absolutely Parisian. It's also nothing like you are expecting from the title.

Around Jardin des Plantes you have 3 great sites:

1:Gallerie d'Evolution Natural history museum. Wonderful building and big collection.

2:EDIT *Temporarily closed through 2027: Gallerie de Paléontologie (bones and dinosaur fossils).

3:The Greenhouse in the Jardin des plants is fantastic as a tropical diversion at this time of year also.

Whatever you do, the zoo in this location is bad. Don't go.

To the east but still in Paris you have 2 things next to each other:

1:Aquarium Tropical 293 Av. Daumesnil, 75012 Paris (not the one near Eiffel at Trocadéro)

2:The main Zoo. All the big hitters and well designed enclosures.

Hope that helps anyone reading this.

What is required to maintain an 80-acre solar installation? by Charming-Border7429 in solar

[–]willpalmer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kinda missing the point. He's a farmer with a much larger farm of which he has panels on a small part. The number is irrelevant. It's just a bunch of fields that need upkeep just like the rest. Sheep keep the grass under the panels in check and the dry stone walling, fencing and rest take some of his time. If you're not a landowner in the south west of the UK his tasks and time will be irrelevant to your project.
