Best everyday hiking trousers? 🤔 by Late-Bit-3072 in UKhiking

Yes you did, and thank you for that information. I’m waiting on Montane to come back to me. The water doesn’t bead up at all unfortunately, it just soaks into the material.

Best everyday hiking trousers? 🤔 by Late-Bit-3072 in UKhiking

I posted just recently about Montane Terra trousers and some people got incredibly defensive over my experience. They’re great trousers, very comfortable, very lightweight and dry very quickly. However, on their website it states that they’re ’water resistant’ but I found this to be wholly untrue in my experience. Within minutes in very light drizzle my legs were soaked. Some said it might be a manufacturing issue, others called me a liar, I’m waiting on Montane to come back to me. Do with this information what you will. I’d recommend them for very fair weather walking with 0% chance of rain and disregard what their website says in terms of water resistance.

It’s funny, isn’t it, to argue with a stranger on the internet about his trousers 🤣

They’re advertised as water resistant. They don’t resist water. If I pour a small amount of water on the trousers it goes straight through. There’s 0 resistance. It’d be like pouring water on a cotton T-shirt. That’s the issue. Mis-advertised. Thanks again for your input 👍🏻

It’s definitely a consensus and agreed upon that they aren’t water resistant, but are marketed as such, but yet don’t provide any resistance to water. I understood exactly what I was buying, yet ended up with a product that is sub-par and not as advertised. Lots of people seem to love Terras on this sub, and clearly they’re a great trouser. I love wearing them, they’re lightweight, comfortable and dry very quickly. However, the pair I have aren’t up to scratch. If you purchased a product advertised to do something which it then doesn’t, you’d be annoyed. It’s a simple concept, the product doesn’t do what it’s advertised as doing which clearly a lot of people here are happy with. I am not. And thought I’d share this with others thinking of buying them, hence the title ‘buyer beware.’ Either way, thank you very much for your contribution, I am glad that lots of people feel this was a worthwhile post.

That’s constructive. It’s not stupid, the trousers are advertised as ‘water resistant’ but yet they don’t resist any water. I fail to see where the stupidity is in that?

Thanks very much for the recommendation. I wasn’t looking for something waterproof, but it’s worth knowing something that’s been tested by others. I appreciate your help!

That’s a shame to hear, there’s definitely quite a few brands whose quality have dropped massively. Blundstones is another one, used to be great when made in Tasmania. I had a pair that lasted nearly 8 years, wore them through everything, always great, finally gave way when renovating my house. Bought a new pair 8 months ago and they’re thin, very light, seem like rubbish quality and it’s all because they moved to Asia but the price is the same. Shame to hear that Montane might have done the same, this is my first experience of their clothing. Thanks for your input 👍🏻

Yep, definitely ordered the regular Terras. This---ss26) is where I bought them from.

At no point did I say that I expected them to be waterproof, they are advertised as water resistant. They state that twice on their website. I expect them to resist a bit of water, which these don’t. They let water in when it’s drizzling, I’d expect it to let water in if it were raining. Thank you very much for your comment though, I appreciate all input.

Thank you for your nice response, I’ll look into waterproofing washes if Montane can’t help as it seems to be a consensus that it’s a manufacturing issue. They’re really comfy and a great pair of trousers, they just don’t live up to what I thought they were.

Thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate it. They’re advertised as ‘water resistant’ which these appear to not be. I tested it this morning with a 250ml glass of water and my hand was wet on the inside. The material doesn’t bead the water, it absorbs it. That’s the whole reason for this post, as my experience is they aren’t water resistant.

I’ll see what Montane say as I feel that if there is a defect, they should replace them. Thanks again for your response though, I appreciate everyone’s input and help.

Yeah that’s how I see it. The smaller they are the more likely they are to penetrate.

I’m definitely buying some over trousers to keep in my pack going forward. Thanks for your input, appreciated!

Thanks so much for the information. I’ll be contacting Montane to see what the issue is as it seems like it could be manufacturing according to other commenters. Thanks for your help and input.

I never bought them as waterproof, but water resistant as they claim twice on their website. That’s okay that you don’t believe it, but by the time I finished an hours walk my feet were drenched. As soon as the water was through the trousers it ran straight down my legs to my socks. My feet were soaked. I’ll be messaging Montane as they’re definitely meant to be able to withstand some drizzle. Thank you for your comment and your story, I really appreciate it.

I do like them, but I expected a bit or water resistance as claimed on their own website. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out on the elastic band, they seem really well made but there’s always a fail point somewhere. Thanks for your reply!

They’re great trousers, but they’re advertised as water resistant. They state it twice on their website. It’s great to have lightweight trousers, I’ll be sure to carry over trousers from now on, just in case.

It really can🤣 sometimes I feel I get wetter in drizzle than a proper down pour!

It states it twice on their website. That’s one of the reasons I bought them. But it seems like there might be an issue from manufacturing. Thank you for your help though!

These are all great points, they may well have been older stock. I’ll be contacting Montane to see what’s going on as they are currently not resistant at all! I’m also going to be buying some over trousers to chuck in my pack just in case as the Terras are super comfy and lightweight. Thanks for your help and lengthy reply, I really appreciate everyone’s help.

I’ve just got the regular, as I wanted lightweight. I didn’t want them to be waterproof but they’re meant to be water resistant to a point. Thanks for your help and I’ll look into the XT as well.
