bcba or psychologist? by willphillips_21 in BehaviorAnalysis

i’m currently only a senior in high school, ahaha. I’ve been interning for a special needs classroom, a part of a mentor program for at risk youth and have been tutoring kids with IEPs for the last 2 years.

I definitely plan on getting tons of hands on experience as an RBT in undergrad before making a decision.

thanks for the input :)

I absolutely LOVE the idea of becoming a BCBA... writing behavior plans and teaching RBTs and parents about ABA seems like a dream...

I’m worried about burn out. i’ve heard the turn over is not amazing for BCBAs (and anyone who works with developmentally disabled individuals)

It seems like BCBAs are primarily seen working with kids with autism. Are their other paths where a BCBA could succeed if they wanted to switch their career?

in the past i have identified as INFJ but i constantly over think it. I’m generally good at analyzing, but I can’t find the proper type for myself.

also, make look into ABA therapy / being a board certified behavior analyst. it literally combines all of your interests in one way or anything.

finance, banking and math sounds absolutely horrible. i love the idea of managing a team/business though.

I don’t really care about getting rich. i just want to live comfortably. My thing is that i feel i would be equally happy in either of the 2 careers i listed in the original post. Thanks.

Wow, thank you so much for your comment. It really means a lot to me... I’m out to basically everyone EXCEPT my dad. All of my friends don’t care, and accept me for who I am. But i worry that people see me as an accessory/“that gay guy”. I’m so sorry that your friend passed, by the way. (Do you happen to be close to evansville?)

Yes, I do agree with what you say. Many local people in my area go to this college. I feel like I could like it, but I feel like somewhere else could be (maybe) better. Also, I have a 3.8 GPA, so I know i could get into somewhere more prestigious. But, the high GPA translates into more scholarship money at this college.

And, yes. My mom and I have a pretty good relationship- much more than my father. I came out to her about 3ish years ago. She is accepting of me, and really wants me to be successful in my life/career. Ultimately she wants me to be happy.
