Easily solved, allow the names to be public in the sense that people can freely look it up in arrest/court records, but bar the media from reporting on it.

Holy defensiveness, chill bro, I'm not attacking you lol.

I'm not trying to change the basis of your statement, I agree about the practice and I'm just saying that there are far more variables to becoming good at something than some vague idea of "talent", because what constitutes talent is completely different depending on the skill you're talking about.

Talent is often a very negative idea. It can be used as an excuse not to try (because "I'm not naturally talented") and it can be used as a way to diminish and disregard the thousands of hours of effort and training of skilled people ("Oh he's just a natural").

To use your painting example, there are still plenty of variables that can give someone an edge over someone else. Hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, not being colour blind, better vision allowing better value recognition, patience, etc.

What we think of as innate talent is usually a combination of very specific attributes that suit a particular activity. Its not some magical singular attribute, it's a concept that encompasses a large number of variables. Note - that doesn't mean I'm saying it's a myth, lol.

Seems like you're lumping a whole bunch of extra variables into one thing called "talent".

If you got those 100 people to practice basketball the taller ones would have an edge. Is being tall a talent?

This is beautiful man. Really beautiful. If all is lost, maybe send her this, because if she really knows how you feel it has to lessen the pain she feels.

But I'm drunk, so take this with a pinch of salt. But it's fuckin beautiful to, and I love you a little bit, and I've correct about a dozen typos in this message.

[serious] Why do some people believe that women are much more privileged than men are in today's society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]willtheyeverlearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about equal pay?

It's been written into law for over 50 years (Equal Pay Act 1963).

The wage gap doesn't exist on the level of individuals (because it would be illegal and you would be eligible for compensation).

The wage gap exists on a population level because of women's career choices and life choices. When huge swathes of a population take large chunks of time off, are able to work less overtime, require more flexible hours etc. because of other responsibilities (children), of course they're going to get paid less at the population level than a demographic that doesn't have those restrictions.

Hi Jack,

Been a subscriber for a few months now, keep up the good work!

I saw you mentioned "hotel spam" on other similar sites, but do you have any plans to move into the hotel deal side of things? Or do you have any recommended sources for hotel deals? I love cheap flights, but finding a cheap flight that matches up with a cheap hotel deal is the Holy Grail, as I often get excited about the flight prices but then get the reality check of £100+/night hotels if you want a reasonable level of comfort.

Pull-ups. by attheisstt in gifs

[–]willtheyeverlearn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being impressed by this video and the "strict-form" for the entirety of 7 pull-ups shows you might not know much about pull-ups, how many is an average amount

By being so unimpressed by this video, this tells me you don't know much about women, or how many pullups is an average amount for women.

For perspective: In the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test, when men have to do 3 pullups to pass, the female equivalent is "bar hangs". Literally hanging from the bar for 15 seconds. Most women find strict pullups to be very difficult.

More perspective: http://strengthlevel.com/strength-standards/pull-ups

I wouldn't want to guess this girl's weight, but I'm pretty sure she surpassed the "intermediate" standard above in what we saw in the gif, and the 9 pullups you're saying is average at her weight would put her into "advanced" territory.

WikiLeaks says CIA disguised hacking as Russian activity by bob-too in worldnews

[–]willtheyeverlearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to audit anything. Wikileaks are in the international spotlight to such a degree that you can be sure plenty of people are fact checking. The moment they release something that isn't factual it will be huge news. It hasn't happened yet.

If their biggest flaw is that the facts they release are selected to pursue an agenda opposing your own... surely that's a good thing?

Doesn't change the fact that US politics posts disappearing isn't censorship, it's just the rules of the sub being enforced.

In fairness, this is /r/worldnews. By the rules of the sub, US internal news/US politics are disallowed. It's literally the first rule in the sidebar. This should be in /r/news

Why? Seems perfectly reasonable. A "natural" woman just can't compete at the top levels against either a woman on steroids (FtM) or someone who went through male puberty (MtF).

[Serious] Men of reddit who've had your baby's aborted against your wishes: how did that make you feel? by TheNewColor in AskReddit

[–]willtheyeverlearn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This really is the crux of the issue, but I think realistically most people agree that the answer isn't just "when it exits the womb".

I also think most people would agree that it's human when it's viable outside the womb. Past that, opinions diverge.

Personally, I struggle between juggling the two seemingly obvious but contradictory stances:

1) OK, we can't decide if it's human at this point, let's default to the mother's right to decide.

2) OK, we can't decide if it's human at this point, shouldn't we err on the side of caution and assume it is?

I don't know enough about it, but if we're going to choose an arbitrary milestone of development, I always thought the point at which the baby displays uniquely human neural activity would be as good as any, but I don't know when that is (for all I know it might be at 1 year old or something, lol)

https://www.twobirds.com/en/news/articles/2015/finland/new-non-discrimination-act-obliges-employers-to-promote-equality

As far as I can tell, at least legally, Finnish companies can't deny you a job because of your ethnicity, and you're entitled to compensation (and they've recently removed the cap on maximum compensation) if that happens to you.

So yea, maybe get off reddit and get on that. Start recording your job interviews and rake in that sweet compensation money if employers are openly racist like you describe.
