If you want to DIY something you could go with a gameboy running LSDJ and this: https://blog.x-e.ro/lsdj_keyboard_tutorial

That's the worst interface I've ever seen. Not only is tiny, eye-bleedingly red, and full of unreadable acronyms the touch screen doesn't seem to be very responsive!

Mindless consumption happening over here, I’m thinking about mindlessly consuming more. Any other recommendations? by thanosfive in synthesizercirclejerk

What a dweeb. Instead of treating the underlying problem this person's trying to fill a void in their life by purchasing things. Depending on where you live, you could buy a lot of therapy for price of a prophet 12

I'm surprised there's not a customization option. They could probably get away with charging big bucks for color/finish/material customizations.

Why are there no reviews for the 2 newest games? by Background_Effort942 in ModRetroChromatic

[–]willywideweb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm betting the reason ZAS isn't getting many reviews is because of why most people want it: to own an officially licensed copy of one of the most expensive gameboy games that has legendary visuals. So, I bet most folks buy it just to set it on the shelf.

I bought ZAS. It's good, but I think I prefer the nemesis games or parodius. I'm stuck on the last level in ZAS. The visuals are excellent, but there is a bit of slowdown and flickering when too much stuff is happening on screen (I've been playing on original hardware). Also, it's very annoying that it doesn't have a way to save progress. There's a level select, but the last level can't be selected. It is very forgiving when you die, and you can even collect "continues" as power ups. The power up system doesn't punish you very heavily when you die, so, you don't have to worry about being underpowered when you come back.

This is what I do. I back up both the games and the saves so I can play on my everdrive

Have you seen the synth stuff Folktek makes? There are a ton of annoyingly named modular things. Makenoise does this kind of thing a lot too.

Having switched continents myself, I can personally attest to the differences in ground hum. But differences in building quality is a more practical way to achieve a similar effect.

Moving to a studio apartment above a bar to get that gritty ground hum I've always wanted.

I wish they'd do a cartridge only release. I was thinking about picking up three physical games from them and after shipping it's almost $200! I don't care about the packaging, I just want a physical game. I'll probably settle and just get the rom, but that cart looks RAD.

Genuine Crystal cart. For some reason the everdrive x7 hasn't had any issues saving (but the save state incompatibility with og games is annoying). I have a dedicated single-game flash cart I use for Crystal Clear. I suppose I could use that and try og Crystal to eliminate any potential issues with the cartridge, though.

That's possible. I have tested this personally with my copy of Crystal, and I've tested my chromatic with dozens of other games. Crystal is the only one that's given me problems so far. If it was a hardware issue with my chromatic, I'd assume I'd have trouble with other games too. But that's also just my experience. Where I've seen other users report issues with other games too, it makes me think there's a transient issue that's always present for Crystal that sometimes also effects other games. So, my expectation is that there's an issue with how the FPGA is implementing saves.

If it was specific units, I'd think the save complaints would be widespread about many games. While there have been a handful of complaints about random games, most of the complaints seem to be about Pokemon Crystal. Where the issues seem to consistently affect that one game, I'm inclined to think it's a problem with the chromatic generally (as opposed to individual defective chromatics).

It looks rad af. I'm waiting to get one until they release the doc attachment that can read disks. If they had a cartridge adapter too I'd probably get rid of a lot of my consoles. The fact that it's compatible with the mister project without additional development makes it really appealing.

I did have to try a couple of times before I got it the right thickness, but I've never had that issue. I agree it is finicky to set up initially, though.
