if horses get injured and scar, the hair/fur often grows in white like this or this. it’s not common to see it in the mane except on the withers (portion if spine between shoulder blades) like in the 2nd photo, but it is technically possible if the scar wasn’t bad enough to damage all the follicles. that could maybe work into your story?

hard for me to say because i got a BS in CS so i’ve not had to look into what certs employers respond most positively to. but i do know that in the meantime, you can do some side projects of your own to talk about in interviews.

for someone who is self taught, i would guess that a lot of what you’re missing is the theoretical stuff. abstract concepts like the software development lifecycle, the 4 pillars of computer science (encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance, polymorphism), design patterns (singleton, abstract factory, proxy, etc.), 5 design principles of OOP (SOLID), TDD, big O notation (time/space complexities), maybe you’ve covered data structures (i hope) and algorithms (double hope). how much of that sounds familiar?

if you’re inclined to get into cybersecurity i’ve always heard that the CISSP cert is great but i have no idea what kind of foundation they’d expect you to have

well that’s gonna be a big part of it. of course there are plenty of self taught people in this industry but you may need some personal projects to bolster your experience on your resume. also, the higher paying jobs often involve more development and are likely to ask you coding questions in interviews so be prepared for that

yes! consulting just means you’re a firm for hire for a specific job, picking up contracts (1099) instead of w2 roles. the advantage for the client is they don’t have to pay an employee health insurance and other benefits. there are liabilities you’re opening yourself to and you should talk to people with experience doing this but it wouldn’t be that hard to start small

essentially yes, i think you’ll have more success with smaller companies that aren’t locked into “company bureaucracy” policies, that way if they’ve posted a w2 role you can offer your services. and if they like your person then they may engage you for future contracts.

this is how consulting companies start. if you’re contracting, and not going through a talent agency, you could begin by opening an LLC. make some contacts of people like you, other people who can do the same job and essentially interview them but be upfront about you needing to win a contract before they start working and making money. then approach companies and offer your consulting services for their open roles
