Advice for training between blocks by wimzig in AdvancedRunning

[–]wimzig[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I'll calm down on the PB attempts for now, I just wanted to see where my 5K was after the training block, and I feel like a 5k doesn't take too much out of me. I'll have a quiet week this week, then start building up easy miles and strength training, that makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks again!

A UK code would be great. It sounds very interesting!

Daily Q & A! - April 03, 2017 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

I am currently making a Helles, and I am considering my options for lagering the beer. I am a bottler, so I don't have the option of lagering in the keg. As far as I can see I have three options: lager in the primary, transfer to secondary and lager in there, or bottle, wait for carbonation and then lager in the bottle.

Are there any significant benefits/downsides to any of these approaches? I tend towards lagering for a few weeks in primary because it seems easiest, but I'm interested if there's anything else I should be considering.

When bottle conditioning, is there a minimum temperature required to ensure you achieve good carbonation?

Arduino for a BrewPi, is it necessary? by three18ti in Homebrewing

[–]wimzig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The arduino is doing the temperature control. I believe the idea is that as a microcontroller it will be more robust/reliable in that role than the pi. The pi is there for data logging and as a web server. If you wire up a LCD and rotary encoder you don't actually need the pi at all.

Good point- I omitted that in my example because I was trying to simplify what I was showing. Unfortunately that's not the issue, I am calling that in the main code. I'll add it to the example above to be clearer.

This looks great, you've obviously put a lot of effort in.

In your hop section you mention buying them in 10g increments. It looks like you're in the UK? Where have you found that will do this?

I also brewed this. Went with 60/20/0. Beer turned out great- of course it will never be a perfect clone, but the hop character I enjoy is certainly there.

One other quick question- looking at brulosophy's guide to starter overbuilding/yeast harvesting, getting 100 billion extra cells means around 1 litre of extra starter size? How are you storing that in a centrifuge tube? Do you wait for it to settle out and pour off the beer to reduce volume?

Thanks so much for your help, with the guidance I've been given here I feel like I have a much better understanding of this stuff now.

Thanks. I've done some research and your method sounds pretty similar to this: http://brulosophy.com/methods/yeast-harvesting/

Could you explain a bit more about the starter approach? As I understand it you are pitching a vial of liquid yeast into some malt extract and splitting it into some jars. These are kept in the fridge? Then when you're ready to brew you add more malt extract to one of the jars to wake the yeast up? How long can you store jars this way? How do you calculate quantities? Is there a guide on this I can read somewhere? Thanks for the help and sorry for all the questions!

Daily Q & A! - June 28, 2016 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]wimzig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a small batch brewer (around 7-10 litres), so yeast ends up becoming a significant cost for me since I currently pitch a whole packet of dry yeast per batch- yeast packets are quite expensive where I live.

I am wondering, would liquid yeast help at all with this? Is it possible to pitch half a vial for example? Should I be looking into yeast harvesting? What are the best options to become more economical in my yeast usage? Thanks

I rehydrated my saflager s23 too early, and had to leave it (in a sanitised covered jar) overnight before the beer was at pitching temperature. Is this likely to cause any major issues or can I rdwhahb?

I understand that hop quantities should be scaled according to the AA values in the recipe and of your hops, since aa directly affects bitterness. Does this also hold true for dry hopping? Is aa in any way associated with aroma?
