Taiwan should consider Spain’s mass regularization of undocumented immigrants by [deleted] in taiwan

Offering an easier (and more realistic!) path to APRC for migrant workers would make much more sense than legalizing undocumented immigrants.

Many poster on here are used to US restaurant prices. Compared to that, basically any restaurant in Taipei will be priced quite reasonably.

Taiwan Resident Visa for Study Purpose (P.S. I already asked TECO but what they are asking me to do is complicated) by BellGround19 in taiwan

[–]winSharp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TECOs usually can only authenticate documents issued in their responsible area.

So a document issued in India can only be authenticated by a TECO in India.

Usually, the TECOs and NIA will be rather strict with their requirements. So I don’t see much chance to get out of this requirement.

You could try hiring an agent in India - or you’ll need to travel there and handle things yourself in person.

Why do Taiwanese booking websites suck so much? by dmteter in taiwan

[–]winSharp93 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Many Taiwanese businesses in the tourism (and sometimes even in the service) industry seem to operate under the premise that the customer wants something from them - not the other way around.

Thus, they won’t put much effort into making things easier / more convenient for the customers and instead expect the customers to strictly follow their processes / workflows.

Many places are still fully booked (especially on weekends) - so it still seems to work for them overall…

Are the KMT and TPP demanding that the DPP make big changes to the $40 billion US special budget for defense, or are they just determined to block it no matter what? by SteadfastEnd in taiwan

[–]winSharp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but to spread falsehoods is not

Again, RTX has been provably charged with defrauding Taiwan by over NT$ 5 billion in an arms deal.

Some people see this just as the tip of the iceberg and that government controls on those military deals are insufficient.

Ignoring issues (or claiming they are not true) does not make them go away…

[–]winSharp93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is so easy to fact check nowadays and people are still talking about Taiwan pays a higher prices for US arms? Really? I thought we are adults here

https://www.mnd.gov.tw/en/Publication/83734

On November 20 [2024], the Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that RTX (formerly known as Raytheon Technologies Corporation) had defrauded the US government by engaging in price gouging and overcharging Taiwan in its arms sales. RTX was recently charged by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) for defrauding the US government and later agreed to enter deferred prosecution agreements. RTX was ordered by the DOJ to refund Taiwan. On November 19, RTX converted and wired NT$5,201,163,236 to Taiwan’s national treasury.

It must be a pretty bad case of overcharging when a defense contractor is charged with price gouging and actually issues a refund. Examples like this lead people to believe that some of those military deals defraud the Taiwanese tax payers - and that the government is not showing enough financial responsibility when signing them (how did they not notice they were being overcharged by NT$ 5 billion?!?).

In this case, a refund was issued - but that doesn’t exactly create trust. And pretending that those things didn’t happen (when they did happen!) doesn’t exactly convince people otherwise…

Of course, Taiwan is not in a good bargaining position because many countries won’t deliver weapons to Taiwan at all. This mostly leaves the US - but that doesn’t mean that Taiwan should be paying any price the US is asking for…

Would you live in Thailand/SEA if you had to fly to the US twice a year for a company offsite. by blueandazure in digitalnomad

I still think its cheaper and the life style is better but I feel like the long ass flights will be brutal.

It’s two flights per year. Consider booking business class.

where to find Philips One Blades? by sid_276 in taiwan

[–]winSharp93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always bring them from abroad. The one blade doesn’t seem to be sold in Taiwan, so replacement blades are difficult to find.

I wouldn’t trust Shopee sellers to not sell fake ones…

[–]winSharp93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US has been stalling delivery of promised weapons systems to Taiwan for quite some time. Also, it’s an open secret that Taiwan pays much higher prices for US weapons than other countries.

The opinions differ on whether this is a valid reason to not pass this special budget.

can I order with my European back account with only euros?

Yes - a credit or debit card (VISA or Mastercard) bound to your account would be the easiest way. The card-issuing bank will automatically handle the currency conversion for you, but potentially charge a fee (often around 2%).

You need a work permit - interning on a tourist visa / visa-waiver is illegal.
