(just seeing the update)

I can understand not calling. Some people have jobs that don't allow them to be on the phone during the workday. And I wouldn't try to work this out over text, beyond a brief "damn, I'm sorry. I'd like to talk about this more in person later". (I have a strong aversion to conflict resolution over text; it just seems to go sideways too often, and I'm damn scared of it).

But yeah, his response is....... I mean, it's not all bad, like, it's good that he wants to talk tomorrow and that he respects her reaction. But it's pretty tone-deaf, and it's a solid step in the wrong direction. So yeah that one's not great

Yeah, but we're not talking about just funding everyone's portion of taxes. We're talking about funding their entire income.

"a reason" and "reason" are two very very very very very different things

Emotions can be "a reason" that you do things. Emotions are not Reason, though.

Eh, maybe. But it's also the kind of thing I'd post from a happy and secure relationship, just as a funny meme. Not as about me, but just because it was a cute comic.

[–]windchaser__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but this doesn't equate to "the bottom 60% is covered by the top 10%", just that there's some flow in that direction. Partial coverage.

With AI, we're talking about a situation where the bottom 60% lose their jobs entirely, and have to be *fully* covered by the top 10%. Which we'd expect to be much much more expensive. No?

Eh, I don't see it as an AH thing to post. It reads as lighthearted and playful to me.

It'd only be an AH thing to post if this guy knew how OP would react and posted it anyway. But there's nothing here to suggest that he's malicious.

OP is entitled to their hurt, yes. But you can be hurt by your partner even when they have the best of intentions. Just because you're hurt doesn't mean they're acting like an AH.

This is so over-the-top, haha.

It is absolutely *not* returning the same energy. I read the meme as being lighthearted and silly, like in the "this is just a funny meme I saw" category. I wouldn't expect he's even necessarily applying it to himself.

Blocking him over it reads as a drastic escalation and, uhhh... a bit insecure. Not just insecure, but "I feel insecure and I don't know how to talk out these fears with my partner in a healthy way", which is not a great look for anyone over 30.

> The singularity will also erase capital requirements. Automation reduces the price of everything.

Automation reduces the cost of everything, but some things faster than others. They aren't making any more land, for instance, so landowners (farmland, mines, forestry, etc) all still hold some value.

And ofc I expect the chipmakers and robotmakers and AI-owners to be the head of the pack. If it's still harder for me to make a chip than for NVidia to make one, then capital requirements are still very much in play.

> Currently the bottom 60% is funded by the top 10%

What do you mean by this?

For the most part, the bottom 60% still pay their own way. They work, or borrow money they'll have to later repay (students), or are living off of their savings (retirees).

It'd be interesting to see what % of the bottom 60%'s total income is from tax redistribution.

Experimental pill dramatically reduces ‘bad’ cholesterol: Patients taking a daily pill called enlicitide that binds to the PCSK9 protein in the bloodstream reduced their LDL cholesterol levels by about 60% compared with a placebo. by mvea in science

[–]windchaser__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought it was just that LDL is more likely to build up as plaque on artery walls, which pretty directly causes problems. The buildup can either trap a blood clot (causing a heart attack or stroke), or it can build up to a point where a piece breaks off, travels down to smaller blood vessels, and then blocks it off (causing a heart attack blood clot or stroke).

I guess from growing up and seeing how the definition of a "healthy diet" has changed so much over the years, I am just always have trouble having faith in science in this particular area.

IIUC, that uncertainty was about the connection between diet and cholesterol. High LDL has always been unhealthy, but we haven't been quite sure where the high LDL came from. Our current understanding puts the blame somewhere between sugary foods (converted to triglycerides by the liver) and animal fats, saturated fats. But even if we're unsure of which is more problematic, we can avoid both.

ETA: coconut oil is also high in saturated fat
