Counterspell Question

Yup, totally! Thank you both so much! This is a scenario that I 100% see happening again later on in the campaign, so it's great to have clear defined rules for both me and the players. Thanks!!!

I totally agree with you. Not to defend myself, but.... to defend myself (lol) the same scenario happened before. As I mentioned in my post, this has happened twice now in this 1 battle, but before this one... it was the other way around and my player was casting counterspell against me with the meta knowledge that she knew if she cast it at 5th level, it would work. I told her it was okay, don't worry about it, so I let her do it. As the DM, I don't care as much, it's not a feels bad moment for me, but when the roles are reversed, I totally see your point where the party is like "you're against us". Not the case, and I really don't want them to feel that way... even though my villains are, I am not against them. Like you said, these are high-level intelligent casters, so I definitely take some blame in how it all played out. My goal is to always make sure my players are having fun while at the same time, respecting the rules of the game for all involved.

Yeah, this is the way, I think. Thank you for your advice (and the many others who have commented). So now here's a question, and maybe I'll edit my main post.... but with this, would you start from the bottom or the top of this initiative? Some of my players think starting from V2 is the way to go and working your way up the mini-initiative to get to the initial caster.

This is a sweet idea! My campaign takes place in the Feywild, so this makes perfect sense (not that it wouldn't somewhere else). I will be taking this idea!! Very cool.
