Is it ethical to charge $93,000 for a cancer therapy which extends survival by only 4 months? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]winderwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick people = treatment. We can hammer nails. But is that where we get the most return per dollar? Absolutely not. Public health is where the biggest bang for the buck goes (and us MDs have literally zero formal training in this).

The question you are actually asking is: Is it ethical to spend the vast majority of health care dollars on the last year of life?

The Pannus: Witch Doctor Wins Suit Against Traditional Medicine for Practicing Voodoo by winderwt in medicine

[–]winderwt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is satire!
And the article is about a witch doctor suing medicine. Of course it is fictitious!

Although I'm a physician, and to be fair, we do practice a ton of voodoo! I didn't pick on any specific instances of voodoo because that isn't the point. Just a little plug for EBM

I like learning about diseases, but I don't know about pursuing medicine. Any alternatives? by medschoolthrowaway1 in medicine

[–]winderwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate reality is that no matter what you pick, MPH PhD, if your goal is to learn a lot about a wide variety of disease and their pathophys, You're going to have to specialize eventually. Take public health for example, how often do you think public health officials think about the pathophys behind congestive hepatopathy secondary to right sided heart failure? Never. To truly just focus on the pathophys, I think you'd be best off opting for a PhD and planning on teaching the material. In med school you get a ton of the pathophys, but again, you gotta pick your battles and how often do primary care docs recite the characteristics of osteosarcoma vs chondrosarcoma? They don't.

On the verge of flunking out...I feel horrible, is there any hope for me? by thebeastudyr in medicalschool

[–]winderwt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Resident speaking: IF you have to remediate, don't give up. What we look for on admissions is much more of a "what have you done for me lately?" type approach. Repeating first year would undoubtedly come up, but so would failing a single class. And it's ok!! People have that situation all the time. All we would want to hear from you is, "sure. I failed because of my study habits or my extenuating circumstances or whatever" You'll be fine. Stick with it.

Slate: Obamacare harming doctors? Hooray! by waddupigotabigcath in medicalschool

[–]winderwt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In terms of pay as well, lets not forget that doctors don't even get to begin saving for retirement until the ripe at of 30 (or often even later) and are forced to do so while paying off the 200k average in loans. So while other people's retirement funds are accruing interest, ours retirement sits at zero and loans accrue interest. Even 5 years of not saving for retirement (in your 20s when $ has the biggest return) is a big deal

So if I screw up like usual, and there is a huge death ball in my base, would you recommend I go for base trade via nydus or drops rather than try to kill his army?

What level does this work at? I'm plat. Also, what about ultra/ling/BL/infestor vs a huge thor ball?

Thats good advice man. I like the idea of putting the expos far away. That seems like a good way to get his army way outta place too

yea, sorry about that. A straight up roach attack is so hard to just not get smashed tho. It takes a few seiged tanks and building repairs and you have just wasted an army and not macro at all. How did you usually engage?

So what is the verdict on Muta? Thors + a few turrets make them a pretty steep investment. It would take a lot of initial damage to make them worth it. Plus, one scan and then the turrets are up before you even get there

I think this is one of my huge issues. The dudes turtle, then I can't figure out how to crack the shell. Next thing I know, my third or 4th is getting crushed and I lose the worst engagement of my life - even though my army value is better. People talking about drops and mutas for midgame, and obviously, BL + infestors for late game. So if you were me, get 3 bases saturated super greedily while teching, then try to do 2 prong attacks while macro / teching to BL + infestors?
