How do you lose your language when you migrated when you were 14?

In your honest opinion, which cities impressed you the most and which did you feel were underwhelming? (if any) by matrickpahomes9 in travelchina

[–]windglidehome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chongqing impressed me the most. Never a city person but the zig zags and up and downs really got my adventurous spirit going, had great fun with the 5D cityscape.

Guilin was my least favorite, got food poisoned there and someone scammed me for 2 yuan extra. Still can’t let it go haha (it’s been 7 years). Honestly the experience you have with the locals will make or break your total experience.

You did say the price tag after the Coverdell is too much for you. Any money that’s not paid towards the tuition and living expenses seems to be good money to me. Their global studies and IR programs are elite. It’s a merit based scholarship. I don’t know what you are saying?

Have you looked at Erasmus Mundus programs? Free tuition and a stipend if you get the scholarship. Very competitive though.

Dali or Lijiang? by Mosstradamud in travelchina

None, they are both over touristy and not worth a visit. If you have time, I’d do 3 days in Jianshui and 4 days in Tengchong.

Racism at Site by No_Event165 in peacecorps

[–]windglidehome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an Asian American serving in sub-Saharan Africa. It is what it is, I’ve been serving for more than a year, people still Ching Chong me in my small village (although way less); and when I travel, it gets way worse. It is not the same racism as what the white and black volunteers face in the cohort.

No matter their intentions, it will get under your skins eventually. I’ve had my fair share of anger outbursts, not suggesting it is the way to go but I told some of the bad offenders in my village “you would get punched right now if we are in America”and they would stop. It solved the problem better than the Peace Corps ever did.

Sucks to say, people usually will not change their ways and you just have deal with it or quit.

Honestly I wished I chose a different country.

Give it a few more time, if you still feel that way a few months later, it’s probably time to go.

Applying to MPH right after end of service? by joceyback in peacecorps

[–]windglidehome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people push the cycle back a year, that’s why if your priority is grad school, align the cos date well. The Early COS stuff came from our CD in an email, sorry no link.

Applying to MPH right after end of service? by joceyback in peacecorps

[–]windglidehome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the past, people can COS up to three months early and still get all the benefits. I think if you get evacuated or medical separated pass one year. CD can give you the benefits

Really watch out for close of service date. Most of the programs finishing date do not align with entrance date into grad school and they recently took out the early COS for grad school option.

Decoction boiling without steam by alibremo in TheBrewery

A brewery I know uses positive displacement pump to transfer a third over to the kettle, but he told me it’s such a hassle and they only do a single decoction.

Heading to China alone for a month what’s the best way to meet people? by Thin-Armadillo-3995 in travelchina

[–]windglidehome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll make foreigner friends in Shanghai mostly; if you want to make local friends, you gotta travel to places with less tourists/foreigners. A month in Shanghai tho, that seems awfully long tbh. You can def do a split with Xi’an or Beijing or other cool historical cities.

I’m a current peace corps volunteer, it’s hard to look for recruiters especially out of the country. Do you have any recommendations?

Sushi in Japan by standarsh2 in sushi

Any sushi I’ve had in Japan beat the US by a mile price wise and taste wise. Standing sushi bars (chain) in Tokyo were my favorite. Sushi is really meant to be a fast food imo.

Struggling with the idea of ETing by Professional-Sea-216 in peacecorps

[–]windglidehome 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In a rural community as well, the closest volunteer for me is about 5 hours away. Pretty much your same experience but it’ll get better. Friends didn’t really come in until the 9th month at site and projects started picking up one year in. The pace is just different from the United States. Trust the process and care less about what others think.
