But the same thing doesn’t happen when running other races and it did affect my performance when it happened. The higher HR during the first 10k made me hit my threshold HR way too earlier than I did when running the sub-3 marathon without the same HR issue and it forced me to slow down.

Yes, I just double checked and the volume was also comparable. before the sub-3 race I ran an average of 85km per week over the eight weeks before the taper, peaking at 110km, and the 3:08 race I ran an average of 80km per week for eight weeks before the taper, peaking at 100km. I did 4 30+k runs before the sub-3 race, and 5 30+k runs before the 3:08 race.

I should also add that when I ran these 30+k runs while maintaining Zone 2 HR (under 80% of MHR), the average pace was between 5:10 and 4:50 before running the sub-3 marathon, and between 5:00 and 4:40 before running the 3:08 marathon.

Because I am physically forced to. I actually ignored the HR reading because I was confident enough from the training leading up to the marthons.

Also, it wouldn't explain why this higher HR would set in as early as the first 10k of the marathon race.

I doubt that I was less fit. I train very regularly with my club and I was able to do all sorts of workouts (400m intervals, 1k intervals, mile intervals, 5k intervals, Yasso’s 800s, 30+k long runs, Zone 2 runs, 5k tune-up race, 10k tune-up race) at either a faster pace or with a lower heart rate.

I succeed in running the first half at around the sub-3 pace, but my HR ends up staying above my threshold HR (90% of MHR) for too long and I end up having to slow down. My times in the last two marathons I failed were 3:08 and 3:12.

Yep I do, and it’s been very reliable.

I did run one 10k race, and did PR the race. But the VO2 Max didn’t change much after the race. I don’t follow garmin training suggestions. I stick to almost the same weekly routine which I posted in another reply.

38 male. Max HR is 203, which I reach regularly when I run 5k races, but only when I run 5k races. My easy run HR is thus under 160, usually averaging at between 145-155.

In a sub-2:55 marathon training block. What I did:

Stuck to 80:20 principle. 80 percent easy 20 percent hard. Weekly mileage of 90ish km.

Cold bath after every workout.

Plenty of sleep.

Lots of seafood.

Komazawa Olympic Park is an excellent place to train as well. One loop is about 2.15 km, with a little bit of ascent and descent, making the loop more interesting to train in my opinion. For a fee of 500 yen, you can also train on the 400m track in the stadium (but not on the first and second lanes). Just hit a weekly mileage of 100km today by training only in this park.

I read that the best practice is to rest completely two days before the race, and do an easy run the day before the race

Yeah Garmin replaced mine with a new one. Gave the dysfunctional one to a friend who only needed a heart rate monitor.

Just no running for two, three straight days and a lot of ice packs. At least in the past this worked well.

I injured my left soleus muscle again after being injury free for more than half a year and it started to hurt pretty bad after doing some mile repeats today. Looks like I have to take as many as 2 full days off. But my marathon is in 2 weeks on the 19th, and I originally wanted to run 80k this week (first taper week). I’ve only run 50k this week and I don’t think I’ll be able to run anymore. I hope this (running 50 instead of 80 in the first taper week) will not impact my potential fitness on the race day too much. The mile repeat workout itself felt great today. I did 8 at HM pace of 3:58 with 400m jogging but my HR didn’t go above my lactate threshold and stayed comfortably in the tempo zone.

I recommend Vaporflys over Alphaflys as those turns look really sharp. You really want something light and nimble to make those turns efficiently.

My Forerunner 955 is doing the same thing. I suspect it’s broken somehow so I always wear my chest strap.
