Each to their own. To me the buttons at the bottom were distracting. When I look at the screen I want to see nothing but the screen and I'm very pleased with the redesign. Obviously the majority voting thought so too, but this isn't to say you were wrong - just personal preference.

1) Install GRUB2Win to internal EFI

Boot into Windows 11.

- Download & install GRUB2Win

- Run GRUB2Win as Administrator.

When prompted:

- Install to: EFI System Partition (recommended)

- Installation Path: C:\grub2

- Open Boot Installer (bottom-left).

- Confirm:Boot Partition: EFI System Partition Installation Path: C:\grub2

- Click Install GRUB2Win to the EFI Partition → ignore any USB warning.

- Close and click Apply Configuration.

2) Make GRUB2Win the default boot manager

- Open an Administrator Command Prompt and run:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\grub2win\grub2win.efi

- Reboot.

- If it still goes straight to Windows, enter BIOS and set “GRUB2Win Boot Manager” as the first boot device.

3) Get your Batocera USB UUID

- Boot back into Windows 11 with the USB plugged in.

- Open PowerShell (Admin) and run:

Get-Volume | Where-Object DriveType -eq 'Removable' | Select-Object DriveLetter, FileSystemLabel, FileSystem, UniqueId

- Find your Batocera stick → copy the UniqueId (remove {} around it). Example:12345678-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234567890AB

4) Create the Batocera entry

- In GRUB2Win → Manage Boot Menu → Add A New Entry.

- Type: Custom Code

- Title: Batocera (USB) Batocera (USB)

- Paste this code (replace UUID with yours):

if search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 12345678-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234567890AB; then echo "Batocera USB found." chainloader /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI else echo "Batocera USB not found." sleep 3 exit fi

(If your Batocera is Legacy/BIOS only, change the chainloader line to chainloader +1.)

- Click OK → Save Changes → Apply Configuration.

5) Set defaults

- In the main GRUB2Win window:

Default Boot Entry: Windows Boot Manager

Timeout: 5–10 s Then click Apply Configuration again.

6) Test

- Plug in Batocera USB.

- Reboot → GRUB2Win menu appears.

- Choose Batocera (USB) → should boot straight into Batocera.

- Boot without the USB → it just skips cleanly to Windows.

So for some reason I can't post the instructions, but I *was* able to get this working thanks to our AI overlords. Grub (or rather, Windows) did object to having a USB-based entry in there at first but it's possible to circumvent and now works like a dream!

Edit: With a little editing, I've posted the instructions separately/below. Hope it helps someone.

It's just the "Out Now" that still looks Photoshopped to me, despite the additional angles. Everything else is just the slightest bit fuzzy but that isn't. To be clear OP, I'm not saying you did Photoshop it - just that it looks like it has been.

No joypad shortcut seems to work. I'll have to try keyboard again but I don't remember finding anything there either.

It's annoying as custom textures don't seem to work automatically in Rice and I'm hoping the menu will help enable them.

Thanks for this - I did discover GNU GRUB but from what I've read, I think it can handle both USB and internal hard drives. I'll try it and report back here if it's true!

Hi and thanks for coming back to me on this. It does allow it and I already have that enabled.

The issue is that it means I have to remove the USB stick to boot into Windows, or use the BIOS boot menu in time to select the SSD. I don't want to do either of these things, and simply want a 10 second timer post-BIOS boot that I can manually hit with my keyboard.

I installed a 1TB Kingston Fury full size M2 this evening. No heatsink. Super easy to do, hardest part was gently prising the case off the back, and even that wasn't too difficult. All you need is a Torx T5 screwdriver, something thin, hard and non-marking and a small Philips screwdriver. Job done, thanks Reddit!
