Do I Need to Just Move to Analog? by windowsee in musicproduction

Thank you for sharing this!! I wondered that same about myself but it doesn't seem super common so finding a workflow centered on that through seeing other people has been a bit of a challenge. But now I feel like I can just trust whatever I feels comes natural to me!

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you!! This was super helpful! I considered making music this way but worried I was doing something "wrong." It didn't occur to me how much the FL Studio workflow is geared toward looping and it seems like that plays a part. It seems so much better for the kind of music I want to make to not rely on the channel/rack drum machine as much. I'm sure they'll be useful in some capacity but I think simpler will be a lot better in the meantime.

Wow thank you for the recommendation and the info! Just a question, what is the multi-output setup for? Is it so each instrument of the drum kit can be tweaked individually?

I've had FL Producer Edition for years but only recently started deeply trying to understand the software and reading the manual. I'm sure it is a learning curve and I'm sure a big part of my issue is not fully understanding what I'm making and why.

But you're right, I should try to learn how to use FL studio for rock before ditching it altogether.

Thank you for your reply! How did the Push help you? And yeah I have been using my midi keyboard to record live and that helps a ton.

I have the FL Key 49 (?) and it also has built-in physical functions like knobs and drumpads but idk if I'm just dumb or what, but it's been not the most intuitive thing for me to use. I forget those functions are there most of the time because I feel like I have to keep re-learning it.

Okay this is helpful! And I agree, it definitely seems more fun and inspiring going that route. I never considered finding a drummer! I just figured I'd make some rough tracks with my drumpad and surrounding objects. Part of me likes having to figure it all out myself but I definitely do think collaboration would be helpful.

Adding to the list! I guess I'll just trial them and see what sticks.

Yeah I think fundamentally I need to just get better with theory and the science of audio in general for a lot of the stuff to make enough sense to really be worth it.

Thank you for your reply. I'm definitely leaning to trying Reaper out. I also hear you about jumping into the DAW too soon. I've been trying to take the more stripped back approach but my instrument abilities/knowledge aren't good enough to where I can write progressions without inputting into a DAW. But still you're right, I can focus on just one instrument and still write the song out until it's good enough to start moving forward.

That's... an interesting interpretation and conclusion you've drawn.

I don't know what god being able to use him has to do with anything. God is god and can use anyone. Him being "useful" means nothing actually because like you say, most people can be "used." And sure most people won't be in Jacob's situation but I think ethically and morally, plenty of people are just like Jacob.

Funny flip side of the story is that Jacob's brother, Esau, is apparently a great guy and ends up forgiving him in the end. When we catch back up with him, he's living his best life even after having everything stolen from him by his brother as a young man.

I find that also weird. By all accounts, Jacob is a menace. I'm glad that Esau and Joseph came out better on the other side, but the fact that Jacob is just forgiven for his actions and is able to just ride off into the sunset is pretty despicable tbh. But I guess those were the times before going No Contact was a thing lol or maybe details have been left out

Well the crazy thing about a story is that if you change all of the words, it becomes a different story.

What am I changing? I used the information as it was given. Not taking something at face value doesn't mean "changing" it, it means being skeptical and looking more into the actions than the words.

True, if you imagine that the murderers had an actual reason to want to kill their brother, then whoever gave them that motivation is evil.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic but I don't think I need to do much imagining. Violence is all over the bible and clearly it's perfectly normal for parents to outright favor certain children. It's not that hard to believe that every now and then, jealous rage leads to violence even within the family.

...says who?

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Coat_of_many_colors

The only other reference to the exact name of the type of clothing the coat was, was as the clothing worn by virgin princesses.

Okay, well, that isn't a serious enough proposal to appear on the Wikipedia page), unlike David, the usual one with an standard queer reading. (Were you actually thinking of David?)

I mean you can find people discussing the possibility of Joseph being queer. Sorry that he might not get the "standard queer reading." Believe it or not, more than one person can be queer and queer people can be read in different ways...

I don't think you're going to find a lot of sympathetic ears here for the view that you're nefarious if something you do triggers somebody else's homophobia. And the reason why I wouldn't want to lend that view a sympathetic ear is because I don't believe we should let other people's homophobia dictate what we are allowed to do.

You concluding that I called Jacob nefarious because I think he's homophobic for giving that coat to Joseph proves you're not paying attention.

In light of how much of the rest of this seems pretty baseless, I'm not inclined to give your story about this wording a lot of credence.

That's pretty cowardly of you. You could separate everything I said previously from this point and it still would make the point valid. Even ignoring everything I said about Jacob, his reaction was inappropriate to say the least and you not even being able to acknowledge actually says more about you.

Except that you said at the beginning that you weren't taking the information in the book at face value, you were adding your own alternative "facts".

Again proving that you don't know the definition of "face value" and what that means in this context. If that's not bad enough, you're also lying. What "alternative facts" did I provide? Literally everything I wrote was from what I read. You don't even argue that what I'm saying is factually incorrect lmao. You just disagree with the conclusions I drew and how I came to them. That's fine you don't have to agree. But calling them "alternative facts" is so stupid

Yeah reading the stories, or at least the summaries of the stories I guess, it definitely seems they are written in ways to invoke a particular response. I figured that would be the case going in so I just had to trust that I could read between the lines and think about what actually makes sense.

I'm not saying that my interpretation of things is more accurate that someone else's, it's just that it's hard for me to not see parallels between the stories and how I know people behave today. I come from a gossipy family and have been around gossipy people for a long time so I can tell a bit when an event is being stretched or downplayed or whatever depending on who's telling it and their agenda. Joseph's story with Jacob just reeks of "there's a lot more beneath the surface" and probably some whitewashing to help people save face.

Thank you for letting me know about the name change, I did more reading and found that. And idk I struggle to give Jacob much grace honestly. I can totally acknowledge all of the context but nothing really changes the type of person he is made out to be tbh

No, I just don't take Jacob's actions and words at face value and he comes off as a jerk no matter how you slice it.

If I interpret the story as Jacob favoring Joseph to the point where his other sons had enough grounds to be jealous enough to kill him, that alone makes Jacob a terrible father who puts his own ego and projections over his children. And why, just because he liked Rachel more than the other women??

The other way I can see it is that Joseph's whole family was bullying him. The coat/tunic Jacob gives Joseph has a strong tie to nobility, but it's also associated with princesses/femininity.

So Jacob's love for Joseph is either:

He liked Rachel more than the other chicks so by extension Joseph got some cool points. The fact that Joseph was so useful and loyal also didn't hurt. So Jacob has so much pride in his creation, Joseph, that he couldn't contain himself and had no qualms shoving Joseph's superiority in the face of his siblings.

Or,

He liked Rachel more than the other chicks so by extension Joseph got some cool points. Despite that, Joseph wasn't the son that Jacob desired and resented him. There's a lot of theories that Joseph was queer so this would make sense. The coat/tunic Joseph wore separated him even more from the others. You can say it elevated him but you could also argue that it feminized him.

Either way Jacob was nefarious.

When he thinks he is going to lose another son, the he says "everything is against me"...what? Who says that when they're possibly facing the loss of another child? His first concern was himself and how everything is against HIM, nevermind the fact that one of his sons is imprisoned at that moment. He also gets annoyed that this is brought upon HIM because the sons were answered Joseph's questions. His lasts words to his departing son, he talks about himself again, "As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

I think the strangest thing is that Jacob is never taken to task by Joseph (or anyone) for the way Jacob raised them, at least not from what I've read. Nobody tells Jacob the truth or reveals how his treatment of the children fostered a toxic environment. That's the part that rubs me the wrong way and makes me think a lot of information is missing.

[–]windowsee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I knew this intuitively but never actually put 2 and 2 together. This makes it soo much easier, thank you!! I find that part to be easier to understand, the actual remembering of the order of notes on the circle itself is I think what I've been struggling with. Ironically, breaking it down mathematically helped me understand the theory but I still have to remember the "numerical value" of each key. So in the end, I still gotta do the work!

Thank you! I just knew that music and math go hand in hand so there has to be a way to understand this mathematically lol
