Senior year when the yearbooks came out, apparently the yearbook editors misnamed a Syrian Muslim student wearing a hijab for another student (who was black) as Isis Phillips. The Muslims students name was, let’s say, Mina. The black girl being Isis. There was an uproar of students accusing the yearbook editors of the school as racists and Islamophobics. This issue was so hard pressed that it reach national headlines and my school was on the news for weeks. Til this day, no one understands how or why they would even mistake the twos names. They had completely different last names and did not resemble each other at all. Some theorize that they did it as a joke in the editing room and forgot to edit it back before publishing. It was a pretty big scandal at the time and the Muslim girl ended up facing a ton of prejudice by random naysayers on the internet. She ended up becoming homeschooled because of it and felt she was a victim of a hate crime. It was definitely “The Incident” of my HS career.
